This exchange rate if flipping killing me…

It costs me over $2 USDCDN for 1 GBP and I get $.75 USD cents to the dollar buying in the US. I am fast running out of money I have available for gaming!

To top it off shipping from the US is exorbitant and shipping TO the US is just as bad!!! The government says we're not in a recession but that is a bunch of crap. I remember a while back when our dollar was worth MORE than the US dollar. By god I bought a lot of stuff.

Sigh…

Maybe we should create a Canadian swap shop, so we don't have to pay exchange and duty…or even use money…

No wait, that's crazy talk.

First time I shipped a Medium Priority package from central California to British Columbia it was outrageous compared to the same package going to our (US) east coast! And that was a couple of years ago. huh?

Are we still punishing you lot for not having "seen the light" in 1775 and/or 1812? evil grin?

What goes around comes around. I recall some horribly unfavorable exchange rates for USD VS CAN$ or GBP. Your time will come again.

Shipping charges from Canada on Ebay kill any purchase I contemplate from our neighbor. I have ordered numerous items from Poland and paid $5 USDUS Polish Mail and got fast delivery every time. Same item from Canada was $11.50 USDUS to $15.50 USDUS. Ukraine, in the middle of a war with an economy in ruins, runs around $9 USDUS. Plastic trees from China which cost all of $6 USDUS ship FREE! Oz used to have very reasonable and FAST shipping but not anymore.

Yep. If there's a bright side to all this, it's if you're getting paid in British or American currency.

The postage rating has gone through the roof, Ebay is unpalatable…

Mako1110 Sep 2015 4:47 p.m. PST

Ah, the joys of international shipping/buying, with the huge rate increases of late.

Now that oil's fallen by more than 50% a barrel, I guess it's time to start asking shipping companies/USPS for a rebate.

Glengarry510 Sep 2015 8:50 p.m. PST

I have suspended purchasing for now, it's not that dire as I have a metal/plastic mountain to paint already.

gavandjosh0210 Sep 2015 8:53 p.m. PST

It's currently worse in Australia. Our dollar is now well below 50p and well below US75 cents.

Hi Kris

I agree totally with you and it is not so much a rant as
our new reality Still even if the cost of our our gaming materials is going up, there are still a lot of good things about being able to live in Canada

It may be a good time to support our own Canadian retailers With their larger orders they may get better shipping rates and it may insure that they will be around a while. I have been ordering more from J&M Miniatures in Stratford and Meeplemart in Toronto Both provide excellent service and orders arrive quickly , unlike some from abroad , so you get a quick fix.

Maybe some other Canadian based members can add some recommended Canadian suppliers that we can use as well.

Mako1110 Sep 2015 10:24 p.m. PST

The only way I've really been able to get around this is to place larger orders, in order to amortize the shipping costs over more minis.

Perhaps, if you have some friends, or fellow club members with similar interests, you might be able to go in together on purchases as well, to do the same.

Toronto48:

J&M is now in Grimsby, Ontario. Just FYI.

it is getting kinda nuts. We only had less then 5 years of roughly at par with the US. in the 90s and early 2000s were were around .60ish USD.

Jamesonsafari11 Sep 2015 3:44 a.m. PST

The dollar at .75 cents US is normal. We were only at par or better when the US economy was tanking. Now that they are recovering we're back to the heavy exchange rates.

Yes it is a shock. Just do the math and ask if the minis are still worth the price in CDN dollars.

My employer sells worldwide so the exchange helps me stay employed

Timmo uk11 Sep 2015 2:30 p.m. PST

In the UK we've had a long run of poor exchange rates which are now coming into our favour. The prices of Wings of Glory models in USD is what we've been paying in pounds Sterling. We may now see the prices on these drop or many will buy direct from the US.

For many years the pound was weak against the Australian dollar making ABs expensive but now that is reversing and the prices we pay are falling. In time it will change again.

wrgmr111 Sep 2015 10:21 p.m. PST

Imperial Hobbies in Richmond B.C. is the largest store on the west coast. They have lots of stock.

I have enough in my lead pile to keep me going until the exchange gets better. Just have to resist the "Ohhh Shiny" syndrome.

Griveton13 Sep 2015 4:45 p.m. PST

I guess it was about time to get hit with a bad exchange rate. I will try and buy from J & M and Meeplemart.

When did J&M move to Grimsby? I thought James Manto owned it in Stratford?

Bowman27 Sep 2015 6:41 p.m. PST

The government says we're not in a recession but that is a bunch of crap. I remember a while back when our dollar was worth MORE than the US dollar. By god I bought a lot of stuff.

Our dollar is intrinsically tied to the price of a barrel of crude. Time to buy Canadian and paint what you've got already.

BrianH17 Mar 2016 7:36 a.m. PST

I try to buy from Meeplemart and J&M but find they are often out of stock.

The Tyn Man18 Mar 2016 3:03 a.m. PST

Well, the prices are pretty good if you're selling on Ebay to the US…. Planning to put some figure on in the next little while. Also, I remember when the BP was well over $2.50 USD Cdn.

Cheers
Dean
