There has been a lot of discussion about 3D printing and figures. But could 3D printing be advanced enough for battlefield buildings? I have a couple of co-workers who have 3D printers, and I was wondering if it would be possible to get them to print a building for me. If so, where do I find files for buildings? How do I change the size of the object if its the wrong scale? (E.g., 28mm to 15mm). Are there any free packages I can use to design buildings? Or is it all too hard and I should wait a few years? |

It's certainly possible. My son, who works for a house construction company, has designed some 1:100 scale models of his company's houses, which he gets 3D printed to show the clients what their half million dollar dwelling will look like (much better than 2D plans or a drawing). Great detail, separate roofs etc, they look like miniature doll's houses. |

This guy was 3D printed, so I would guess a tabletop building would be possible. |

Yes, you can. I've done it on my printers. Generally you 3D model them yourself on any program that outputs .stl files. All modeling programs allow you to scale as you like, and most printer specific software allows you to scale from there. There is a high learning curve- it's not a magic push button process. You must set up the model to be printed properly and to the level of detail and components you desire (will roofs be removable?, will each floor be removable?) If your desires are simple, you can find buildings on thingiverse, or google 3d warehouse (which works with the free program Sketchup), but these objects are difficult to manipulate other than just simple scaling. |

Nick, I've designed quite a few buildings in 1/600 scale using the free version of Sketchup: link I've also made some in 6mm scale and a fair number of interior decoration for 15mm scale. If you want to drop me a line with what you're wanting to do, I can probably help you out with that. javelin98 AT lycos DOT com |
