anyone playing saga? it looks interesting.
the dice look expensive, but it looks fun.
tell me about it.

Lots of people are playing Saga.

KTravlos07 Sep 2015 2:17 p.m. PST

Its a great game. Cheap, fun, with many tactical options. The dice are not needed as long as you remember the numbers that are represented by the symbols. Also they are a one off investment. A basic warband will cost you about 40-50$ in 28mm, much cheaper in 1/72 or 15mm

Check out the blog "The Tapestry" which covers SAGA.

The guys beat me to it….but I've heard great things too. I bought some Celts and Vikings on the basis of playing but haven't got round to a game yet

I found these vids very useful when determining whether the game would appeal to me
Ep1 Basic SAGA Spending Points, Deployment

Ep2 Basic How to Play/Orders Phase

Ep3 Activation Phase

Ep4 Fatigue

Ep5 Scenery Terrain Cover

I've Vikings, Celts and Byzantines. It is a neat system
to play a couple games in a couple/three hours.

The different options for the different factions and
the choices make a very interesting game, at least to me.

I fell in love with the rules/system. I now have six Warbands and 2 others in the process of painting. Saxons almost done! Every faction is something new. Every game I've played, time well spent.

Saga can be a really simple and basic skirmish game, it can also be a most intense and complex game. Your choice.

Easy game mechanisms to get even beginners started and lots of depth and variety for more experienced players to explore and master through the different battleboards. Warbands are around 40 figures so it's not an expensive game to start with. With some finagling, I've been able to get a box of 1/72 scale Romans (unofficial rules) to do a starter warband. The Laboratory section of Tomahawk Studios has many historical variants that people have put together so there is lots to choose from.

You can also print out the dice faces, available online, and glue them on to dice, or as was pointed out above, it's not a big challenge to remember what the dice numbers mean on each battleboard.

John,

If you come to Fall-In there will be some SAGA games Friday evening and Saturday morning at least. I know that there are folks there who will certainly be willing to teach.

john lacour08 Sep 2015 8:32 a.m. PST

thanks, boys! guess i'll take the plunge…

steamingdave4708 Sep 2015 9:38 a.m. PST

Only played it once. Found it a very enjoyable game. There is a considerable challenge in knowing the best way to use the dice against particular opponents- choose a strategy or activate your own units etc. Find someone who has got the rules and dice and play a few games to see if if it's for you.

I'm running a saga clinic at Cincy con in 2016 with Vikings Saxons and Normans all day Saturday. I was amazed NO – ONE up there was "enlightened". John you get that?

Saxondog08 Sep 2015 1:19 p.m. PST

Great game. I also avoided the dice issue with stickers on blank dice.

keegantdad08 Sep 2015 5:56 p.m. PST

I will be running the SAGA events at Fall In. I always bring extra loaner armies and have everything you need to play. All you need to do is show up and after your second or third game you will have mastered the system and begun to understand the nuances of your army. First event is Friday night and second event is Saturday morning.

Keegantdad -- SAGA, so tempting… Fall In… must check schedule and distance.

Sir Mumsy14 Sep 2015 4:52 p.m. PST

Umm… after reading a certain new thread about the Host, I think I will skip Fall In, but thank you Keegantdad for volunteering to run SAGA at FALL In. I hope you will consider running SAGA at Little Wars 2016.
