On the OFM's suggestion: was Admiral Sir John Byng's sentence of death a fair if severe act of justice or judicial murder?

Why would I care?

To quote Rafiki, "It doesn't matter. It's in the past."

To be clear to "some" that statement is DWS – dripping with sarcasm.

Scapegoat, so sacrificed for the greater good of his superiors in the Admiralty.

Pure scapegoat

If scapegoating someone is judicial murder, then that would be right

Byng went into battle with worn out ships with skeletal crews – no wonder he didn't win! Having him shot meant some nasty questions wouldn't get asked of the big bosses

As I recall, popular opinion by the time of his execution was strongly on Byng's side

Judicial murder for sure – a travesty of "justice"….
