Played 2 games of X-Wing today. First time I've played in quite a while. Both games were fun, but preparing for a game is a real pain in the neck! Finding all the cards and counters and getting them sorted can take HOURS! And yes, I'm sure there are those superbly organized people out there with their boxes and carrying cases who can do all that in ten minutes, but I'm not one of them.

I sure hope Star Wars Armada doesn't end up like this, but I'm afraid it could.

The figures are pre-painted, but the cards and bits are not pre-organised.

Organising is a must.

Alas, my superbly organised kit was developped back in Wabe 1&2 with room for expansion. And now heading into Wave 7 is past the point of needing a new organisational system >.<

It's worth it to buy a couple cheap tackle boxes. Takes me 15 mins.

If you don't want to mess with pilot and upgrade cards, search the FFG forums for a link to fleet-building software that lets you print out your foce on a single sheet of paper. You need the cards for sanctioned tournaments, but if you're flying casual, that will help.

I keep my SW stuff pretty organized but I hate trying to figure out what to take as well. But being a decidedly non competitive player I find picking how many ships I want to use, then taking the highest cost pilots that allow me to hit that number works wonders. It leaves so few points you don't really have to debate upgrades since there's not enough left for more than a few and even less after I take my favorite upgrades.

I think Battlescribe is the best because when you print out your list it gives you details of your upgrades. Print out looks very old fashioned though.

xwing-builder.co.uk looks pretty but it doesn't list the details of your upgrades.

In the end, locally we play with or without cards, but I find myself reaching for Battlescribe if I want to play with some upgrades that I don't have cards for.

Ditto for tackle boxes – they really make it *much* more manageable….

Actually, after you get another core set and all those expansions a player wants, a lot of cards can be put into a ziplock back and marked "Spares and Extras".

But yes, keeping the upgrade cards organized into their own groups is a big help.

One of the things I really dislike about the X-Wing: Miniatures Game are the move templates. They are usable, but can be very fiddly at times. While this doesn't happen in my gaming club, I have see video and heard of games were players will adjust their template to avoid an asteroid or change their move, which is nothing but cheating really. But mostly, it is the fiddly nature of the templates I don't like. However, a gaming friend told me about this variant for the game called heX-Wing, which basically uses hexes instead of templates. I didn't like it at first, but now I only play the game using the heX-Wing variant.

Here is the heX-Wing link on Board Game Geek if anyone is interested:

Why not just play Blue Max instead?
It's fairly obvious from the movies that all the dogfighting that takes place is based on Great War biplanes.

No Winston, lose 5 geek stars!!! The movie dogfighting is much more aerodynamic than Great War. And it's always been known that the first movie fight scenes were actually overlaid on top of WW2 dogfighting footage.

X-Wing is a game of dogfighting in Star Wars movies.

It is not a game about dogfighting in real Space.

Fine. Then play Check your 6.

indierockclimber06 Sep 2015 3:04 p.m. PST

OR you could play X-Wing!

indierockclimber06 Sep 2015 3:07 p.m. PST

Scott, I bought one of these for storing my X-Wing tokens/bits/bobs. I keep the cards organized in a small baseball card box.

I might have to get one of those. OTOH, while it took me over an hour the night before the game to get my two forces organized, my opponent showed up with his cool little organizer and built his forces on the fly in under 10 minutes. HOWEVER, when we were done, I just tossed all my stuff into a box and was ready to leave in 5 minutes, but my friend then took half an hour to get all his stuff BACK into his neat carrying cases. You can't really win :)

Sounds like your well organized friend still came out on top by at least half an hour.

Housekeeping comes with the territory.

I still prefer West End games "Star Warriors"….Hexes and you can easily delete the pseudo role playing aspect.Using the x wing minis on a fasa sttcs hexboard.

As an X Wing player I appreciate being directed to the heX Wing rules, it looks like an interesting variant. Why not play Blue Max or CY6? Probably because I don't have a copy!
