"Recently, I was offered the opportunity to write a first impressions review of Land Of The Free, by Joe Krone. As I am a big American Revolutionary War buff, I jumped at the chance to not only review the rules but add to my already growing pile of unpainted pewter if the rules grabbed me. So, having said that, on with my first impressions.

First off, the quality of the book itself is very good. Sizing in at roughly 7 1/2" by 9 1/2", and 191 pages, it is a very manageable book yet loaded with features.

The page quality is excellent and I like the reduced glare when reading under a light. Despite the glare in the photos I took, no book can withstand direct flash without some washing out of the page…"

The review is an in-depth look at the rules book. The reviewer has not yet played the game.

Rule book looks nice, but has anyone played these rules? You don't see much talk about them.

There are reviews of the game by people who have played it (I wrote one) posted here in TMP. Look in 18th Century Product reviews forum.

So Jon, are these now your rules of choice for AWI?

JonFreitag03 Sep 2015 7:14 p.m. PST

vtsaogames, the answer to that question is complicated.

First, only a very few games of LofF have been played so it may be too soon to give a definitive answer. I enjoyed them but some of the guys in the group did not like some of the mechanisms. I thought it worked well for solo play even with the possibility of inactive player interruptions during the turn. We need to play it more to reach a conclusion about whether or not it has the possibility of becoming the rules of choice.

Second, some of the guys really enjoy British Grenadier so that is often first choice. Also, I have a set of rules that have been pieced together with ideas from many that I find gives a realistic outcome and I enjoy.

That is more of a long answer. Short answer is that it is too soon to tell.

Short answer is that it is too soon to tell.

That's what Chou En Lai said when asked if the French Revolution was a success.

Jon,
Thanks for the links to the reviews. I may have to pick up a copy, the only thing that would hold me back from using them is the amount of markers needed or having to use a roster.

Having played over 20+ games of LOF. This has become my go to set for all things F&I to 1812 (small actions, america). I've used Maurice, BP and BG.
But, the pure Mechanisms of LOF show great versatility to do alot of things.
Element size has been debated on here before, but this only provides customization to any level of action (Ex 1 base models all the way to full size combined Grenadier Battalions).
We standardize the base size for regts for 1812 and AWi in both 15mm and 28mm. Please shoot any questions out, can definitely help explain. I did find it took a good 5 games to really grasp the ideas of LOF, but they are spot on.

Having played a few games does anyone else think cavalry and artillery are a bit too powerful?
