Groucho said it best: "I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member."

I'm one of these invisible gamers: we operate out of our own homes & generally eschew any notion of a club.

Why haven't I ever joined a club? Several reasons not least is that meeting times never suited my career or family commitments.

If you've never been a member of a war gaming club, why not?

Never been a member of a club, per se, but I've been part of gaming groups that met at regular times each week.

Never been a member of a club

Why not (that's the poll question)?

I think that you need to define your question better. Simply put there are those that game with friends on a regular bases but would never qualify themselves as a club.

My understanding of a club is an organization with with officers, dues, and other commitments, such as to grow or expand. A group of friends is just that, friends that limit their group to just their little circle, they aren't interested in letting just anyone join them.

Thus, a good definition of club would be helpful in creating a poll question.

I was a member of a club, because it was there.
No I am not, because it is not or I am not. Not really sure if I moved or it dissolved first.

What year is it?
I think my memory is fading…

Actually, I take that back – I was a member of a club – board-based wargames generally, when I was in Chicago. The Windy City Wargamers. Great group of guys. Got into it because many of them played ASL, which I was very into at the time. Since moving from Chicago, though, no.

Not a member or part of a gaming group. There are many reasons. Mostly based on my schedule, I just don't like going out on a night when I work the next day. I have my own wargaming room and play solo a turn to two at a time. The most recent game (three battles on the same board) has been running for about 2 months.

Not a member of a "club". We host game day once a month and people come and play. Happy to go to someone else's when they host.

Razor7803 Sep 2015 7:55 a.m. PST

While I'm not a member of an actual "Club" I do have a regular group of guys that I game with and we meet ever Monday evening (some Saturdays if it's a large game) at the LGS to game.

I was as a kid, but currently the only clubs I know of here are meeting at times that won't work for me, so my group just plays at homes

Cmde Perry03 Sep 2015 7:12 p.m. PST

Why am I not a member of a gaming club? Probably because I don't know of any in my area. If there was one, I doubt that I would join it because my gaming 'needs' are being met now: I game regularly with one group and sporadically with another. Neither group feels the need to create a formal club.

The HRGG Hamilton Road Gaming Group is based in London Ontario Canada. No dues or fees, no officers or positions (except one me the coordinator) Operating for over 30 years meeting once a week at the Crouch branch public library. Come as you are, play what you want.

I'm not a member of a club; I don't even know if such a thing exists anywhere near me (middle of DFW, Texas).

There is a wargame shop about 40-50 minutes away and I've played a couple games there, and I'd like to do it more, but work, family, and the long drive sap my energy/commitment to driving out there to play on a regular basis. And I don't like the idea of packing everything up to take the show on the road.

I'm a 99% solo gamer because I want to play and it's convenient. I have a room in the house with a table set up, and I can go there and play. I've gamed quite a few times with family members and co-workers, but that has pretty much dried up due to their family/work commitments. I love solo gaming, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss playing against a 'real' opponent.

If there was a spot I could head to in five minutes, that had everything we needed to game, and a regular guy (by my definition of regular) that wanted to play what I wanted to play, maybe ;)

I'm not averse to welcoming newcomers into my home to game, and then we can call ourselves a club, but I suppose I'm too lazy to put much effort into going and trying to find folks. Part of that is because I feel like I probably won't find anyone suitable ;)

I'm probably different (weird?) in my tastes; I don't play rules that are (at least yet) wildly popular, I do it mostly in 10mm (where mostly what I see at the wargame venues is 15mm or 28mm), and I'm not really a 'letter of the rules' kinda guy, more a 'spirit of the rules' kinda guy. So I'm not sure that I could even find folks to form a club even if there were gamers nearby.

And I'm using the definition of club very loosely; a group of guys that regularly get together in a regular spot to play wargames.

V/R,
Jack

We don't call ourselves a club. We pride ourselves as being an unorganized group. But does that make us a club?

COL Scott ret04 Sep 2015 1:26 p.m. PST

Would love to but other things such as family, church, Trail Life USA, work seem to fill all available time.

Usually find an event that I can introduce the boys in Trail life to wargaming, they always seem to enjoy what i have set up.

I would love to explain why I have been 'forced' to become a solo gamer over the years, but I seem to read TMP only on my mobile so typing is a chore.

I am pretty much a copy of Just Jack and fully understand. I've given up trying to meet 'suitable' gamers, and I live in a very active gaming area with clubs and cons. I no longer try because I know how the story will end. Plus, I don't like the entire 'blind dating' scene of meetup gaming groups.

My reasons primarily are social, or lack thereof. It's a shame so few adults today have acceptable social skills. There are words longer than four letters, you know! ;-) I've had enough. So has my wife and kids. I play board games with them, but have given up on other gamers. So now I am a solo miniatures gamer.
