Some ponderings about the Battle of Taranto project in 1/1800 scale. It's all coming together rather nicely.

Please forgive my question---I do not mean to offend----

Can anyone give the reason that Italian ships were painted with the Red and White stripes?

JasonAfrika02 Sep 2015 10:19 a.m. PST

Identification-so their own planes would not attack them. But it kinda backfired as they made nice targets for enemy planes.

From a miniatures perspective, I think it adds a nice dash of color. I agree though, if I were in the Fleet Air Arm and looking for a target to shoot at, that fleet would be in for some trouble.

It wasn't the Fleet Air Arm or the Regia Aeronautica they were worried about – it was the Luftwaffe!

Nicely done ships

Bingo Frederick….ony time you need recognition insignia is when you have air superiority…while Italians didn't, Luftwaffe did during this period!

Beautiful ships.

1/1800 scale?
What will you use for Swordfish?

WaltOHara02 Sep 2015 1:10 p.m. PST

Troopwo.. they are all Pico Armor sized. I know, I know, that isn't remotely the same scale, but planes at 1/1800 are like pinpoint sized. I'm cheating it a little (you can see a picture of the ships and planes together in scale in the blog post) But I think the visual effect makes up for it nicely.

Like many raid-type games, the "raidee" potentially doesn't have much fun. The answer is for the gamers to play the raiders and the GM runs the defenders. For Taranto, players could run 3-plane squadrons with their own objective.

WaltOHara03 Sep 2015 8:40 a.m. PST

That's exactly what I have in mind, Schogun. The Italian player is reduced to rolling anti-aircraft rolls and that isn't much fun, so I'll do that part.

Even though the historical raid was 21 Swordfish I added 3 more so that I could run 8 players flying 3 planes each. For victory conditions, we just see how the team does-- how many ships either are sunk or put out of action for a long period of time.. and that gives us a range of outcomes.
