Athos is supposed to be a count from an ancient family. I have no idea how many rich and powerful counts there were in France at that time, but would such a person really be able to hide in a well-known unit like the King's Musketeers without being recognized? Weren't there a great many noblemen in the unit?

In an era before photography most folks wouldn't really know what someone else looked like.

And if he was from far in the country and had never been to court….
Never read the books, just saw several movies. grin

He was Milady's ex-husband.

France is, and always has been, full of broke Counts. Hence the revolution thingee.

I'm from a small city, about 20,000 people. For some reason people I meet, assume I know someone who may have come from that "city".
Then again I was not a noble from that city, I'd best be described as a feral, although I was personally invited to spend Christmas with the Governor's family once.
😁
So goes the work of fiction…😉

I'm sure a few people did know his identity, if only to verify that he was of sufficient rank to join the Musketeers. (Ditto for Aramis & Porthos.) But it would have been exceedingly impolite to say anything.

link lists the number of comtés, and hence I presume of comtes, in France – not all active at any given time.

Being gentlemen, they obliged the man and turned a blind eye to his silly farce.

"Athos" is a name of a mountain in Northern Greece, and that fact is mentioned in the book. Someone mentions that the name "Athos" isn't a man's name it's the name of a "Mountain".

The implication being that the name "Athos" is easily recognized as being a assumed name, with all that implies.

In other words if he was recognized by anyone, they would know he has given up his real name for whatever reason, and respect what he is doing.

You must realize that in an era without photography, where good paintings were a rare luxury and few people ever travelled further away from their home than a day's walk simply moving a few hundred miles more or less gave you a new identity.

I've always wondered about the names Athos, Porthos and Aramis.
They don't sound all that French. grin
