Does anyone have experience with making and using filters? I am trying to paint up some Battletech mechs in white and I was thinking of trying out filters to get some interesting effects, but I have never used them before. I know what Mig produces many but they are rather expensive. So, a couple of questions:

Do filters have to be made from oil based paints? Can they be made from acrylics? What is the difference?

What is the consistency of thinner to paint? I am assuming 1-10 ratio.

Does anyone use them? What were your impressions?

I don't have any of the MIG filters but I have made and used filters with acrylics and oils, with a brush and with an airbrush. 1-10 might be on the high end of paint. This guy ( link ) recommends closer to 1-20, and there's a pointer there to an article by Mig himself on using filters.

So, filters are glazes?

So, filters are glazes?

I thought filters were washes.

What's the difference between a glaze and a wash?

What's the difference between a glaze and a wash?

A glaze is shiny?

Filters are not washes, washes you leave to accumulate in and around grooves etc. Filters you do not, useful stuff here

From Captain Cook's link:

"Many modellers contain knowledge of both Filters and Washes although few understand there differences "

- a basic grammatical mistake doen't bode well for the accuracy for the rest of the page …

If washes and filters are so different, how come the paint manufacturers (e.g. Coat d'Arms link or Vallejo link ) don't produce any filters?

@ MajorB

This is a Spanish company so you should expect/allow for some grammatical differences.

If you used both you would see that there is a difference between the two,if you are painting toys for wargames filters are IMHO an unnecessary indulgence. Yes I do indulge these days, I like the subtle effects obtained.

In so far as I can tell, filters are glazes, which Vallejo produces, along with glaze medium, which I've played around with. Search for glaze vs wash.
