post Captain sounds very good. but I am not really sure of my ability to model that small of a vessel. The SOG ships look good online, but the rather large bases are a turn off, particularly for another game system.

So, can you trim down the bases, or are they OK as is? Or can you remove them completely and do your own base?

And while I am at it, how are the SOG rules themselves? Yes I know, I am going to search, but newer commentary is also usefull

Sails of Glory is a game with card maneuvering like Wings of Glory, but it is a much more detailed game. It can be played as basic, advanced and Expert levels to add extra details like special ammo, damage control etc etc.
IMHO its a fun and enjoyable game.
Have a look at this site sailsofglory.org

I have done some solo rules for it (as have others!) – if you want to see it in action go to this blog post: link

I honestly don't notice the tall bases any more, though they looked 'clunky' to me when I started!

Owen,

In answer to your questions:

The SOG Ship Bases come in two parts. There is a thin (1/16") clear plastic piece that fits into the main part of the base, which allows one to read the 2 sided Ship Card that fits in the main part of the base.

The ships attach via a stem in the bottom of each ship which fits through a hole in the base and Ship Card. The stem can be cut off if you wish!

I've seen smaller scale sailing ships mounted on bases far more "clunky" then the one's SOG uses. After one has painted and rigged a ship why would you want run the risk of damaging all that work by having to handle the model while gaming with them?
