For a period that you are wargaming, do you find scenario books to be useful? (Assuming the scenarios are for your preferred rules or can be easily converted.)

Yes.

Winston Smith28 Aug 2015 10:32 p.m. PST

I love them.
They are the clearest indication of how the author intends his rules to be played.

The best scenario books are not dependent on the rules. We use the British Grenadier books as guidelines for our Age of Reason andThe Sword and the Flame games.

I have used the Asquith and Grant non period specific scenario books extensively and now use a lot of the Neil Thomas scenarios.

I greatly prefer a scenario to lining troops up in a pitched battle….

I like them because I get very little time to game and much less time to research the battle I might be interested in playing.

dwight shrute29 Aug 2015 4:34 a.m. PST

Yes, historical ones … more of them please !!!

Cardinal Ximenez29 Aug 2015 5:00 a.m. PST

Yes. I think any rule book with a few included is a degree better than those without.

Cosmic Reset29 Aug 2015 5:12 a.m. PST

Generally no. With respect to historical battles, I find that too often, the scenarios lack map detail or are too small in scope. Thinking back about scenario books that I own or have owned, about 1 in 4 have been useful.

Dynaman878929 Aug 2015 6:13 a.m. PST

Scenarios are all I play. For WWII games I frequently convert ASL scenarios for them.

thosmoss29 Aug 2015 6:27 a.m. PST

Yes -- affectionately also known as "shopping lists".

I'd turn this around and ask "Why would you not?"

Use them, but modify a great deal of each one I use

The scenario's, that is

Yes, good resource for games.

As per Irishserb "Generally no. With respect to historical battles, I find that too often, the scenarios lack map detail or are too small in scope."

However, I enjoy conducting the research and reflecting the actual numbers to the nearest 20 men (one figure) plus finding the original maps and replicating the topography to the gaming table making the terrain as realistically as possible. To each his own.

Yes.

The Charles Grant scenario books are the most frequently used wargaming books I have.

You bet I do. I'm a sucker for them.

Salibaba29 Aug 2015 6:50 p.m. PST

Yes! I haven't painted up any of my ECW armies yet or gotten a single game in… but I have collected all of the Pastizan Press Scenario books for ECW scenarios!Just because they're cool hehe

AussieAndy29 Aug 2015 6:52 p.m. PST

Yes, subject to the following.
1. The maps need to be useable. Some people want vast detail, but, given that I game on a grand tactical scale, I am looking for stylised maps with only the key features.
2. Maps need to have a scale.
3. I hate scenario books which are advertised as being suitable for all rules sets, but, when you shell out your hard earned, you find that that they are designed entirely around one set of rules.

Howler29 Aug 2015 8:32 p.m. PST

Yes. Don't have the imagination to come up with my own.

GarrisonMiniatures30 Aug 2015 8:47 a.m. PST

Very much, especially with pictures showing how it played out, etc. For historical battles, always interested in terrain interpretations, as well as which troops are included and which ones missed out – scenarios rarely have the luxury of being able to represent everything.

Mako1130 Aug 2015 11:05 a.m. PST

Ja.

YES!

ViscountEric31 Aug 2015 7:56 a.m. PST

For an era I'm NOT playing, a good scenario book could (and should) be mined for ideas.

rjones6931 Aug 2015 5:51 p.m. PST

Yes, definitely!

Old Contemptibles31 Aug 2015 11:48 p.m. PST

Is this question a joke? By all means yes!
