Before going grumpy old men on me, this is just tounge and cheeck. 1. They whole thing about greeks winning over persians because the persians used wicker shields and very little of no armor, while the greeks used heavy shields, bronze, linothorax and leather armor.
Well totaly wrong, the spartans used leather thong, and the athinians use leather kilt. even a linen tunic would be to heavy and protetive. The persians used not only lots of leather armor, but has steel plate armor, some 2000 years before it was invented. But don't worry it dosn't work, a sword can cut through it like it was paper mache with metal paint(which it problebly was) 2. Only about 10% of athenians use shields, while about 80% of spartans use them, this is probebly the reason Sparta won over Athens in the Peloponnesian War 3. Bows do not have any maximum range. 4. Humans have about 20 gallon of blood right under the skin, a tiny knick anywere on the body will make them more or less explode in blood. 5. Persians discoved their oil reserve much earlier then thought. 6. Greeks had geneticly modified grain some 2500 years before we rediscoved it. 7. Persians put steroids in their panthers. 8. War rinhoes 9. Persians, worse then Nazis, commies and facist all in one! 10. Greeks in 2500 B.C were much lighter in skin and hair then modern greeks. (to be fair Alaxander, a movie I like alot, does the same thing) (and all Jesus movies) 11. Ancient sea battles were really boring(I knew this allready) |

Ancient Greeks were indeed much lighter complexioned than modern Greeks. Ancient literature often refers to blond or red haired Greeks, green and gray eyed Greeks. The Dorians, who conquered and settled in Greece before the Classical period, were fair haired northern barbarians. When the Turks conquered Greece in the 1400s, they introduced a lot of the genes that make the modern Greeks swarthy. Millenia of transmediterranean trade by the Greeks also gave them opportunities to mingle DNA with Middle Eastern and African people. |

I also learned that ancient greek "heavy Infantry" fought melee in a open order using swords, not spears, and also discovered that persian immortals were in reality orcs from Mordor. |

Multiple watchings of "300" has allowed my wife and I to discuss my DBA armies. I hope it becomes a very long franchise :-) |

I learned that for maximum effect, you DON'T plant your feet and thrust. Instead you leap as you stab your opponent. What your high school physics teacher taught you is bunk apparently. Also, corpses make good wall building material. |

I could forgive the bad history if the movie had any redeeming qualities, but it does not. |

Trists between generals on the eve of battle are OK but should be undertaken with care! Probably needs more research. I think Herodotus mentions it quite a lot. Apart from that it all seemed pretty authentic. martin |

"I enjoyed 300, as the film version of a comic. You have no imagination guys." I don't want to se half naked men play with eachother, I want hoplites to fight!! For all the faults of Alexander, Watcing 20 000 Palangites in bronze and linothorax march in phalanx is a glorious sight. |
