Maybe my gaming tastes are too weird! So, i've got several rulesets on my files but I dont think any of them will fit the bill for what Im looking for: I plan on gaming 15 mm, science fiction, with 10-18 miniatures a side, mostly of them grunts. One of them with special "hero" status or aside. Ok, for that I've got several rulesets that could fit the bill..BUT I also want to add one-two big robots/small mecha per side that do have some nice flavour and are not just "pumped up" power armours. I think my tastes are too specific! Flying LEad is my top pick but i dont think it will handle the mechs properly. |

Do you want tthe mechs to be the dominant force on the battlefield or are they really just support weapons? |
Xolsco | 22 Aug 2015 2:26 p.m. PST |
Well, thats a tricky question. I guess support weapons but with some extra added rules for additional fun (like critical damages, special systems..I guess). I dont want them to be only "a bigger version of a HMG team with extra hit points". If one side decides to not field one of them, it should be OK too. |

How about G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T. The rules are pulp/vsf but I use them for SF with little trouble. Use the VSF contraption rules for the robots but make them more reliable. Each side has a big man who is hard to kill. |

Well, take a look at Meka Tac – Giant Stompy Robot Edition: link You can't beat the price. It's more of a Battle Tech game, but with the support unit add-on it might fit the bill. Uses different sized dice, and the only record keeping will be for the meks. Good hunting for that perfect rule set. |

The upcoming 5150 No Quarter handles Mechs and works with 5150 Star Army. There are lots of rules out there so you'll find something. |

Gruntz does an excellent job with Mech suits of all sizes. |

Another vote for GASLIGHT. |

Are you the guy that asked questions of me, over on the Vault? |
Capt Flash | 22 Aug 2015 7:00 p.m. PST |
Any of Weasel's sets or Warzone 1st Edition will work wonders for this. |
Saber6 | 22 Aug 2015 7:16 p.m. PST |
Have your done the same scenario with all of them? What worked? What didn't? what can you use from one with another? |
SCAdian | 22 Aug 2015 9:15 p.m. PST |
Another vote for Gruntz. It does what your asking for and then some. |

Clash on the Fringe will fit the number of infantry you mention and a hero will have rules that make him stand out. Still unsure by your mecha requirement. Critical damage is in there but would be a bit more generic to all vehicles (though you could easily tweak this). Your non mecha opponent would be OK as long as they have a couple of weapons with some heft. Other build types would work (there is a section called Mechs) but they are more like big power armour with extra shots. Gruntz would also do the job as others have already pointed out. |

As mentioned above, look at GASLIGHT. If you don't have/know the rules already, they have a Quick Start rules download to give you a taste. |

Mmm yes, I do own Gruntz but I see it more squad based. while im looking for something more indiviual based. But then I remember the "all specialists" rules and maybe they fit the bill. I will look at Gaslight after all this social pressure to do so! Clash of the fringe has also arised my interest. |

In what way is a Mech more than "jumped up power armor?" How you think of mechs may get you some more insight… |
RetroBoom | 23 Aug 2015 6:38 p.m. PST |
Clash on the Fringe, Fivecore 2, or No Stars In Sight. I'd just get each of them as they're so cheap and then you can play all of them depending of where a campaign goes :) |

Gruntz. We played a game on Saturday with lots of tanks (too many) and didn't think it worked too well for that. But we actually said during the game that we felt it would be perfect for infantry and Mechs. |
Capt Flash | 24 Aug 2015 6:49 a.m. PST |
Ha! I second Cheesesailor's comment. |

I've been looking for something similar. I am probably one of the few people who didn't care for Gruntz. I found it to be rather tedious and bland. Warmachine/Hordes with a sci-fi skin over it. I am glad I came here, however, as Rogue Planet seems to be interesting. The lack of measuring piques my interest, though not sure how that would actually work. @Terrement – Time, however, is limiting factor. For practical purposes, how would you play more than one rule set on a consistent basis. |

Infinity. Rules are free ( infinitythegame.com/archive.php ), and you have both wimpy ground drones and big stompy beasts. The rules mechanics do pretty much treat the drones as bigger infantrymen (they have "wounds" for example), but they are significantly faster, better armed and armored, AND more maneuverable. The game needs LOTS of terrain, though. |
