There seems to be a groundswell building behind Battlefront/Flames of Wars putative new Cold War Gone Hot offering, 'Team Yankee' based on the novel of that name by Harold Coyle, a cold war US Armor officer who served in Germany, in which WW3 starts in Autumn 1985….

picture

So if I was to put a play list together for that fateful year, to listen to as I paint up acres of T72s and BMPs, what tracks do we associate with 1985?

'Everyone wants to rule the world' by Tears for Fears seems prophetic…

but not as apt perhaps as 'Neuner neunzig luft ballon' by Nena…

How about 'Cant fight this feeling' (that I'll never get this B***** Bleeped text** SLR gas plug properly cleaned of carbon deposit) by REO Speedwagon?

I guess 'Neutron Dance' by the Pointer Sisters is a bit close to home?

How about 'Rasberry Beret' by the artist who could still be named Prince, or Ponce, I forget which – my beret was boring old General Service Dark Blue by the way!

'Smooth (Radio) Operator' by Sade? – she must have seen me get a full score in the Cambrian March and Patrol Competition that year for Voice Procedure, BATCO skills and general all round excellence in radio operation to be so inspired….

How about Born in the USA by the Boss?

'Some like it (their cold war) hot' by Power Station?

Do let us know what you were picking up on your trannies under the cam nets….

It's 1985, and if I picture the Cold War going hot it would be to this

But not this, not ever!

Here's the Billboard top 100, 85 had some pretty good tunes.

I remember the RSM not being happy when he caught my crew loading 432 and singing a version of Shout.

"Shout, Shout,
Buy yourself out,
This is the thing.
We talk about"

Cold Steel22 Aug 2015 5:15 a.m. PST

I always thought this one would be appropriate for WW3:

The propaganda guys played this one night over the loud speakers on the mountain behind us while manning the DMZ.

If we can stretch to 1987, REM's "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" is begging for inclusion….

Sticking to 1985, A View To A Kill probably ought to be on the list, along with We Don't Need Another Hero. Optimistically, perhaps Alive And Kicking…?

Cosmic Reset22 Aug 2015 5:32 a.m. PST

Sting, Russians.

While Springsteens cover of War wasn't released as a single until 1986 it was a staple of his stage show for years so I would include it.

99 Red Balloons

Danger Zone (if we can push it out to 1986).

Martin Rapier22 Aug 2015 7:24 a.m. PST

Also a little later, The Final Countdown by Bon Jovi.

A select bunch from Crass, Discharge et al naturally. Umm,

They've got a bomb and Demoncrats by Crass.
Enola Gay, The blood runs red, State Power and that one with the soundtrack from the Wargame and the immortal line 'have you heard the sound of an enormous door slamming in the depths of hell', all by Discharge.
No Birds Fly Here by The Mob.
Oh Mr Disney by Zounds.
The whole of 'In Darkness there is Light' by Anti-Sect
Something by the Dead Kennedys, possibly Riot, The Owl or California Uber Alles.
You could throw in Holidays in the Sun by the Sex Pistols.

And for something a little more gentle 'Shipbuilding' by Robert Wyatt.

Oh happy days, when things were simple.

soundtrack for ww3 ?
… a big loud bang followed by a atmospheric static hiss for a long as your SW radio batteries last.

Cant stop the Cavalry, Jona Lewie?

Sly Fox and the Family Stone.. Lets go all the way

Lion in the Stars24 Aug 2015 7:59 p.m. PST

Gotta stretch it to 1987 for "End of the world as we know it".

Tgunner05 Sep 2015 5:43 a.m. PST

I'm kind of partial to Scandel… Good Bye To You seems like an Abrams Gunner's song as he's servicing a target!

The Warrior was cool too. The video not so much.

Jefthing05 Sep 2015 10:51 a.m. PST

Ah, 5 August 1985… The first day of my 30-year civil service career, helping keep the Reds at bay with my incredible filing skills…

Although, before that, I worked in a record shop in Egham. One thing I remember about 99 Red Balloons is not selling a single copy (it was released in Jan 1984 in the UK). We kept one for the library and sent the rest back. Never could figure out who actually bought it.

Old Wolfman09 Sep 2015 7:14 a.m. PST

Cold Steel-that one could use a litle more cowbell. ;^)

Bob Runnicles09 Sep 2015 9:52 a.m. PST

Def Leppard's 'Armageddon It' and 'Rocket' would seem to fit the bill, although they were '87 I believe.

Jefthing09 Sep 2015 11:02 a.m. PST

If we're talking 1985, then Dire Straits, Sting, Pet Shop Boys, Black Lace, Baltimora, Simply Red, Manchester United and Everton were all in the charts.

Although the only sound I want to hear from them is their screams as they are crushed by advancing T72s.

Centurio Prime11 Sep 2015 12:03 p.m. PST

definately 99 luftballons
