Our vacationing editor had an accident when putting away a glass… it broke and cut her left pinky finger. She said there was blood everywhere – in the sink, on the wall, on the floor, like a horror movie!

Fortunately, it was her boyfriend's day off, and he took her to an urgent care facility, and from there she was sent to a local hospital's emergency room.

Julia's cast

She is home now, with the finger stitched up and the hand in a cast. However, the tendon was cut, and she is scheduled for surgery in September to repair the tendon.

Sadly, Julia did not have travelers insurance on this trip, so she is not covered for the medical expenses.

(The doctor told her to avoid using the keyboard, so she asked me to pass the information along.)

It's very painful. Yes a huge cut that needs a surgery.

Thanks a lot.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. And a cautionary tale re travel health insurance. I would never visit the US without it, especially having seen a friend effectively left to die from heart failure in a hospital ER until the staff had seen the colour of his money

wrgmr122 Aug 2015 9:00 a.m. PST

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

That is right David. I have no insurance here and I am not qualified for Financial Assistance. I am not sure if I will undergo surgery for it cost much.

MattyGroves22 Aug 2015 11:50 a.m. PST

Is good advice David. The opposite is true visiting Europe, my wife had a hospital visit & prescriptions and we were shocked when not presented with a bill. The wonders of the U.S health 'system' !

Best wishes for a speedy recovery. Good luck with the tendon surgery. Had an employee years ago who cut his on a glass. Subsequent surgery got him complete usage of the finger.

I'll try to call the surgeons office on Monday to hear how much it costs. And ask what happens if I won't go for a surgery. I know it will cost much, but will keep forward on the positive outcome.

jowady22 Aug 2015 7:41 p.m. PST

Get well soon!
