Did the UK have a local militia in 1880?

Still, very cool.

Hi Mike,

There was a militia in 1880 called the volunteer forces, in 1881 these are linked to regular army regiments, but in 1880 are under the secretary of wars control rather than The Lord lieutenant of each county as they had been a decade before ( with the right to choose their own uniforms).

It looks like an interesting campaign, and I like the map, but I wondered why only part of Ireland used?

ChargeSir, could you attempt to untangle LDV, Home Service, and Home Guard? Google and Wiki have only let me more confused. I mean, the BBC entry for Dad's War gives the impression it all started in 1940!

I know I've seen several posts with 'yes, crimson was still used by the Home Service, but khaki elsewhere.'

Thanks!

…but I wondered why only part of Ireland used?

Assuming 'blue' for our brave lads, it appears to show a concentration to stop the hideous interlopers from crossing to the Emerald Isle!

If reversed, haven't a clue; do you have a feel for where the Crown deployments WOULD be?

Being on "home service" refers to British regular army units when stationed at their depots in Great Britain. I believe LDV and Home Guard are interchangeable, and date from WW2. The Territorial Army was similar, but existed prior to WW1 (I'm not sure how far back, though).

The LDV became the home guard and are both WW2 forces. Calling them militia sounds perfect to me, and the game looks brilliant. If you are fighting in Britian then go with redcoats as it looks right and is expected.

Glad you enjoyed it my friend!. (smile)
