I have just returned from a week's excavations in Mametz Wood on the Somme, although not strictly wargaming, it may be of some interest to some in here: link Thanks for reading! |

Alex, My grandfather fought for the Seaforth Highlanders I think near/in the High Woods near Loungevill (sp?). How close were you near that area? I just visited the area earlier this year but the High Woods are now private farmland so I could not walk the trenches. I am trying to confirm the actual location of his unit. Thanks |

High Rougues1, attacks on High Wood were part of the July 14th 1916 Battle of Bazentin Ridge, fought after the capture of Mametz Wood. There is far more about the fighting on wikipedia link Check out the references at the end for more information. But we were not very far from High Wood and Longueval. The Bazentin Ridge can clearly be seen from the northern edge of Mametz. Unfortunately, all the modern woodland is in private hands, so access is severely limited. |

Excellent stuff! My great-grandfather fought at Mametz Wood with one of the battalions of the Welch Regt in 38 Div. My school-friend's dad, David Petersen, made the amazing dragon memorial (tearing barbed wire in its claws). I remember seeing it half-built in his workshop while visiting during the 1980s and not realising the significance until I stumbled across the 38 Div Memorial while visiting Danzig Alley Cemetery in 2006! |
