Previously some of you have helped defend Northampton's War of the Roses battlefield with your support. We now need more help to object to a planning application on the site. Rather than clog up TMP I've put all the details over on this blog posting: link Please take the time to read it and act. It won't take more that 15 minutes of your time and could help preserve over 500 years of history. Thank you in advance, Trebian |

Do you have to be a resident of the UK to participate in this? |

If you can use the forms, you can register an opinion. Of course local opinion counts most with politicians and planners – but this is a national heritage asset and everyone's voice counts. Aside from our emotional connection to the historic landscape, this area is within the designated battlefield as listed by Historic England and so any development should be wholly exceptional. No case has been made at all that this development is wholly exceptional so we must do everything we can to get the planners to reject this application. Follow the link above to Treb's blog if you want to know more (he gives an excellent summary and recommendations) Phil Northampton Battlefields Society (NBC website planning search ref. Duly objected to. Thanks for the heads up. |

As I said in the blog piece, it'd be really quite effective if people from Northampton's sister towns across the ex-colonies had people object. I see no reason why people anywhere shouldn't take an interest. Trebian |

I've objected. To be honest I'm quite upset about this. They really shouldn't be allowed to get away with illegally damaging the site and then trying to get permission. I did wait until I'd cooled down a bit before doing so though. As Trebian may remember from our Flodden 'discussions' a few years back I can get pretty wound up sometimes. Oh, the line I took as a non-local resident was national significance of the site, exceptional development should only be allowed of which a car park certainly wasn't and the illegal damage was pretty out of order. I really hope this helps. Regards Aubrey. |

Sadly, this is the British way. Mess up a battlefield and then get permission/forgiveness for doing do. Unfortunately, unlike our US cousins, we can't even build decent battlefield visitor centres. There are one or two honourable exceptions, but mostly they are dreadful – the Bannockburn centre being among the very worst. |
