As with another thread about 40K I am moving to Dallas, Texas next week for a new job and it appears that the local game stores have pretty active 40K and Flames of War groups. While I prefer WW II rules such as Fireball Forward, Battlegroup Overlord, Kursk, et.all., and Chain of Command, I know that sometimes that when in Rome you must do as the Romans do. I have plenty of 15 mm WW II vehicles but I will need to base up some infantry units in the Flames of War mode in order to have a balanced force. My main question is that I have earlier editions of the rules but know that FoW has gone through many changes since that time. What is the current edition of the rules and how many supplements will I need to purchase in order to be able to play? What is a standard point size force for most games and tourneys? Do I need to have a blue and a red force?

Thanks,

Kim

Coming in October, hopefully.

<humor> Therapy?</humor>

I have the First and Second edition rule books and loads of Minis. Not having local gamers I have never felt the need to really get into it

A lot of money…

First thing you need to know is the cheaper alternatives. Like Old Glory Command Decidion. Plastic Soldier Company. Etc. Just about anyone is cheaper.

If you already have the figures pretty much then just get the mini rulebook off eBay and one of the campaign books which fits your figs.

Might be a good idea to check in the gaming stores where you're moving to as well. If they're all playing desert war and you turn up with Endkampf SS it might lead to some weird games.

I am not worried about buying miniatures. As I stated above I have plenty of vehicles especially for early to mid-war, mostly American, British, and German. I have infantry figures as well for British (Desert 8th Army) and Germans (DAK) I would have to buy infantry figures and support weapons for the Americans but as Winston Smith mentioned there are plenty of inexpensive options and I like both the Plastic Soldier Company vehicles and infantry figures. My main issue was getting the current rule book and IF I would have to buy any supplements.

@ Keyoteblue, I do plan to attend Twistercon as I should be settled in with both the job and living space in Dallas. In fact I hope to be able to sign up to run some games (not Fow) and looking forward to meeting the Texas and surrounding states TMPers at Twistercon. I suppose it would not hurt to go ahead and register and sign up to run some games.

Every theater specific or period specific supplement is out of date the second it is released. You'll have to buy all new books, even if you just bought them last week. :^)

Dice that roll a lot of 6's would help. :)

my only and best advice would be to find a player who has a brain and does'nt play fow.
as someone here has pointed out, fow is pretty much gw, with "new" codex;s and ever incresing reasons to buy more more more.
and the game play is for 10 year olds.

Are y'all saying that you'd rather not play any games at all, rather than playing FoW!?!>

Infantry basing hasn't changed since v1, though some of the guns have changed base size and/or orientation.

Try to stick to about 1500 points if you're playing on 4x6 tables, 2000pts needs a 4x8, and 2500pts needs a 6x8. This will keep tank parking lots to a minimum. I've also found that building a rump battalion with two infantry companies, the weapons company, and a platoon of tanks tends to make for a game that plays more like WW2 actions.

But my local play group mostly does Vietnam as opposed to WW2 these days.

You'll need lots of money. Your new job will facilitate that! LOL! Besides Old Glory/Quality Castings, and Plastic Soldier Company, there's Zveda, and Skytrex in the 15mm scale. If you get that mini-rulebook (version 3) take it to KINKO's have them shave off the binding only about a 1/16 of an inch or 3/32" but not more, and have them put a plastic spiral binder on it. You'll thank me for this advice. That publication as a number of their other soft cover books have flawed binding glue and eventually the pages start falling out. So, do yourself a favor and solve the problem straight away. Besides it's so much easier than having the large hardcover, or laying the little book open – this way it lies flat and you can flip the pages under . . .
