Was it only not he front left or on both sides?

I've seen depictions on both sides of the fuselage.

It varied depending on the individual pilot, squadron or aircraft type.

Aviation Workshop publication depictions of Spitfires and Hurricanes which show views of both sides of the fuselage of the same airframe have Polish national markings and also Polish sqn insignia on both sides. Can't speak for later, or non-fighter, types however, I'd suggest that in keeping with the earlier Spits/Hurris later Fighter Command aircraft probably carried both markings on both sides too.
