I think the movie "Heaven's Gate" was "inspired" by the Johnson County War.

I have spent a lot of time in that country since the 70s. I know a lot of people out there. I am not sure about the present generation, but those who were born in the early 1900s (all gone now), as late as the 1980's still had strong feelings about the Johnson County War. That was from people on both sides.

In my opinion, both sides had valid arguments in their favor. There were good guys and bad guys on both sides. The cattlemen went a bit too far in their "invasion", and some innocent people were probably killed. The whole thing was very tragic.

There was rustling going on, but who knows how many were involved.

The first Lonesome Dove TV movie dealt with it in a fictional way, but not too far off.

TV movie "The Johnson County War" was alright if a bit long.
