The first (with the ring) is man-to-man. The second, is mass battles.

I would not go more than a couple dozen with the skirmish as it starts to bog down. Lots of dice for combat can get quite tedious.

The first one (LOTR SBG) has been sold for about 12 yeras and used as a basis for many variants including dark ages and medieval. The core rules are also used for other games such as GW Legends of the Old West. It works well for up to about 50 figures.

The second one (War of the Ring) didn't last long and was the mass battle option.

War of the Ring requires a lot of figures! And I've heard is a bit unbalanced (just here say never actually played it).
The Lord of the Rings strategy battle game is probably one of the best games ever.

IMHO :)

The War of The Rings fights in units/stands 8 figs to the stand, 2 for mounted figs. It uses some of the same basic stats and ideas, but at much larger scale.

Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game -- lots of statistics, hero special abilities and magic special rules to keep track of so lots of chart lookups and hero status conditions to track (might/will/fate/wounds).

It is best as 2-player game and a mess when more than 4 people. Although I have both books and lots of LotR miniatures, I have only played SBG, but hope to use Wars of the Rings for Helm's Deep and the Pelennor Fields. Some day…

By the way, the journey books supplements are fabulous!

Love LOTR SBG and still play it.
+1 for the excellent Journey Books.
Allows you to reanct the classic scenes from films and books.

Hate War of the Ring – dumbed down with stupid rules and feels simply an attempt to sell more figures.

Love war of the ring, just remove some the heroes/abilities otherwise Legolas is a machine gun wielding death unit.

What other mass battle rule sets are out there?
