I just purchased a copy of 5 Parsecs from home and 5 Core from wargamesvault.com.

I'm looking forward to giving these a try after I read through them.

Any advice for a gamer new to this system?

Start small and vanilla. It's a great system, but takes a little getting used to.

My advice, have lots of fun! Post any specific question you have here, the writer is often on the forums.

Start small, maybe 3 or 4 figures on a small table with a lot of terrain, to get the feel of the rules.

I have several 5Core scifi battle reports on my blog (just skip passed the Brigade Commander stuff): link

Just remember: Reaction fire is shock dice only, use skills to differentiate character qualities. Enjoy!

Feel free to ask tons of questions :-)

Firing at a guy IN cover uses the normal firing dice (but he can duck back to get out of sight), firing at a guy ACROSS cover is Shock only.

and thanks for buying!

I will be back with questions. It looks like I have a bit of a read ahead of me, but from what I hear, it is worth it.

Thanks!

I'd like to think so, but I may be biased ;)

Did you grab the 1st or 2nd editions? Five Parsecs is technically first edition but I don't think there should be any issues at all.

Oops. I got 2nd edition of the FiveCore book.

That might cause more questions.

Weasel11 Aug 2015 3:35 p.m. PST

You ought to be okay. Mostly there's a few things that are distinct skills in 1st edition (like movement bonuses) which are more standardized in 2nd).

The biggest changes were in character creation, but you can sort that out fine enough, Im sure.

2nd edition has far more explanations and examples though, so I'd rather people get that one.

Weasel,

How do you think your rules would work for the All Quiet on the Martian front?

WWI Humans with a few pulp upgrades, against Martians in mostly Tripods.
Second Martian Invasion, so the Brits have a better tech than the USA, but less than Martians.

Thanks for any input.

Sorry, missed this yesterday.

How many guys do you want on the table? FiveCore is mostly aimed at 8-12 "things", whether those are individual figures, squads/vehicles (in Company Commander) or companies (in Brigade Commander).

Company Commander has a scifi expansion with options for giant robots btw :)

Could "5 Parsecs from home" be used for Star Trek style landing parties?

Jimboba31 Jan 2016 11:37 a.m. PST

Err. With a little imagination and leg work any system such as 5 Parsecs can handle landing parties, away teams, spec ops, bounty hunters, etc etc.

Thanks for the reply. Having never played 5 Parsecs, how much leg work would be required?
