Did these guns have exclusively artillery crew or were they crewed by willing infantrymen or some sort of combination (as the French were).

Half and half proper gunners and assisting infantrymen.

I seem to recall that at some point the sappers of each infantry regiment we assigned to the battalion guns in action. Must have made a cool-looking gun team with men in metal mitre caps, with aprons, and axes slung across their backs, serving the guns!
