It has never bothered me on the 0 dark thirty daily? maintenance. Now I'm usually up but hardly ever turned on the computer. But now with a Kindle it's on in a second so while. I go to a few news or blog sites I could go to TMP but can't. So no other sites I go to do this on a daily or weekly schedule why does this place have to? Just looking for a novice answer to satisfy my curiosity.

Bill has to clean the coal ashes out of the boiler, and prevent the electrode beams from crossing.

And brush out the droppings from beneath the hamster wheel.

For those in Oz, the daily maintenance shutdown is in the early evening, rather than the middle of the night. So, I am struggling to sympathise. Bill aint making money while TMP is shutdown, so I assume that the shutdowns are necessary.

Combination of an old platform (Miva and mySQL iirc, which is, umm, rather long in the tooth) and a huge database which that technology can't comfortably handle. Until the long mooted TMP 4.0 appears, it's a necessary evil – afaik the only way to significantly cut the maintenance period in the meantime would be to significantly reduce the database size – ie. massively cull old message board posts, which would be getting rid of a hell of a useful resource.

It is busy reticulating the splines.

As Dom noted, it is a feature of the ancient technology TMP is written in, it needs some offline time to rebuild its indexes.

Yes, it is a pita and not something you'd expect in any website developed after 1998 (periodic system maintenance apart).

Daily maintenance starts around 9am for us here in the UK.

Yeah, it's terribly inconvenient, as it means we have to start the working day by working instead of browsing TMP…. ;-)

Thanks for the explanation guys.
Toronto48- that's how I picture it.
