Colonel's Roman inspection report abour Wheeler's Cavalry Corps shows that majority of CS cavalrymen were armed with rifles (~4000) with only smal number of carbines (~500). Does it mean that they used long infantry guns ? If yes, how did they carried it when on horseback – attached to saddles or on the back, using sling ? |

I've seen illustrations of Confederate cavalry, mounted, with full size rifle-muskets slung on their backs. |

Most likely short Enfield rifles (not rifle-muskets) or Harpers Ferry rifles -- at least those would have been preferred, because not so unwieldy. |

There were a number of Confederate cavalry units carrying long arms. And yes, it was clumsy. It helps to think of them as mounted infantry. |

The problem, of course, was with reloading while mounted -- not at all easy. |

The problem, of course, was with reloading while mounted -- not at all easy. They generally fought dismounted. When mounted the favored weapons were pistols and shotguns. |
