Colonel's Roman inspection report abour Wheeler's Cavalry Corps shows that majority of CS cavalrymen were armed with rifles (~4000) with only smal number of carbines (~500).

Does it mean that they used long infantry guns ?
If yes, how did they carried it when on horseback – attached to saddles or on the back, using sling ?

I've seen illustrations of Confederate cavalry, mounted, with full size rifle-muskets slung on their backs.

Most likely short Enfield rifles (not rifle-muskets) or Harpers Ferry rifles -- at least those would have been preferred, because not so unwieldy.

There were a number of Confederate cavalry units carrying long arms. And yes, it was clumsy. It helps to think of them as mounted infantry.

The problem, of course, was with reloading while mounted -- not at all easy.

They generally fought dismounted. When mounted the favored weapons were pistols and shotguns.
