In your VBCW campaigns and battles, does foreign assistance to any of the sides involved feature highly?

More is mentioned about German, Spanish, and Italian involvement than French. How do you see the French response?

Thanks

Or America….

IIRC the French are providing support to the Anglicans.
Russians to various communist/socialist groups (Liverpool Free State).

Other than some small volunteer forces, foreign kit, and the odd foreign Advisor I haven't seen any formal foreign interventionist forces in any of the games I have played or read about. I don't think any would be welcome, and would be more likely to unite all the factions against whichever faction incorporated them into any battle force.

When we first created the crisis, we had in our head that the various foreign powers would be rather wrapped up in their own problems, or that the intervention would be similar to that in the Spanish civil war – some materiel support for the extreme right and left, and small numbers of 'volunteers'.

We didn't want major powers getting involved; it is a 'very British Civil War' after all! ;o) )

Porthos06 Aug 2015 8:54 a.m. PST

I have used my Spanish Civil War Falange as (mostly token) support to Mosbey's troops. The United States I expect to be isolationist.

Sundance06 Aug 2015 9:25 a.m. PST

The Germans were planning on intervening around 1940 with or without a civil war.

I don't see America getting involved; I expect them to be isolationists as well.

"America" might not get involved (as in, the US Army, USN, or any other branch of the US government). However, there were examples of individual Americans and groups of Americans getting involved in international conflicts, like the Abraham Lincoln battalion in the Spanish Civil War. On that basis, you could certainly see Yanks in the VBCW.

DyeHard06 Aug 2015 11:39 a.m. PST

Not America, but Americans.

No reason not to have the Abraham Lincoln Brigade.
Or Even a Charles Lindbergh Brigade of pro-Fascists.
Or a KKK group, Fenians, Union groups like Wobblies (Industrial Workers of the World). Americans had money, weapons, and like to get into fights.

Commonwealth/Empire troops?

Zargon06 Aug 2015 3:55 p.m. PST

Yes the Afrikaners will help with the creation of 'Free States' in the far North or any other group of god fearing Calvinist groups needing support, (thus creating another faction :) to add to the fun.
Cheers

Or the US could invade and conquer Canada while the UK is busy with its internal affairs…

I was just studying Skippy's interesting list of units in his VBCW collection. I try to keep to a historical time line as closely as possible so even though Reilly would be a nice addition to the my intelligence group, he had been killed by the soviets in 1925. Likewise Bonnie and Clyde were assassinated in 1934, too early to be in UK for the Civil War.

However, I can easily see Rick Blaine and von Lettow-Vorbeck involved. Both were anti-fascist types. von Lettow-Vorbeck was close friends with Richard Meinertzhagen who could be in the intelligence service of some faction, and invite his friend to form an anti-fascist group from ex-Schutztruppen officers.

Joe Kennedy was pro-fascis and could easily have formed a unit for the BUF. Not sure about the Boat Service, perhaps just an American Irish contingent.

capncarp08 Aug 2015 9:00 p.m. PST

Bobgnar, Joe Kennedy's "Special Boat Service" may be an allusion to the alleged methods he used transport alleged illegal alcohol to allegedly be sold in the United States contrary to the then-current Prohibition laws. Allegedly.

I've got the Belgian Protectorate of Caldey Island – the Belgians landed a force to protect the Belgian trappist community there. The Belgians do a lively trade, dealing '13% Belgian Monastic Fighting Potion' to the various factions ashore…

Jemima can you post what the Belgian troops look like?

I have been thinking about adding Rick Blain to my contingent. Running guns as Skippy suggests. However, I worry about having him on the table with Sam Spade, who is in the Anglican League Special Operations Directorate (intelligence service). Is it allowed to have alter egos together on the table ?:)

There is Sam in middle of front row, between DCS Foyle and 'Evy' Carnahan.
