I'm looking at making some buildings for the Hundred Days Campaign and I'm wondering about the common colors for the roofs. I've looked at paintings of battles and photos of existing buildings. I'm finding a mix of orange and gray in both paintings and photos. I'm reluctant to put much faith in modern photos since there's no telling how many times the roofs have been replaced since 1815. Paintings aren't entirely reliable, either, since we don't know how much research the painter did on the subject. Anyone have any thoughts?

Interesting. If our contemporary views are based on paintings and the like, how would we tell if yours were "right" either way?

Personally, I would go for a look that matched contemprary artists, but I will be interested to see if there are alternatives. My guess is there will not be much archival evidence of actual building materials used, but "never say never"

Most older buildings use traditional styles that haven't changed much. Certainly, the like of Spain/Italy/Portugal still get lots of orange. Belgium, while since I've been buc=t again the older buildings'look' traditional.

Slate was quarried in Belgium, though they also imported a lot of Welsh slate at the time. Local ceramic tiles were also common.

Some paintings of the buildings can be reliable as the painter could have painted on site, "en plein air".

The Stoney Waterloo pictures were painted days after the battle in watercolour here: link

These only give a general flavour of the colour, but they support your general observation. Mostly grey (presumably the slate), but with some buildings reddish (presumably the local tiles).

Would it be possible to offer both colours – for customers to choose?
