OK, so I put a unit out on the table to paint, and I usually have a few other miscellaneous figures around the edge, for just in case I squeeze out too much flesh, or blue or brown. The unit gets completed, but the others don't. They can sit there on the table for a year so in a slowly increasing state of being painted. Sometimes they get picked up and put in a box as part of a cleanup, sometimes I get energetic and finish off one or two of them. I'm in the process of cleaning the disaster area, and I find I have far, far more of these half painted figures than I thought.

Does anyone else have bunches of half painted figures running around?

Many, many half-painted figures… I try to do their bases, to encourage me to continue painting them. Sometimes, it actually works. ;-) Paint on! Cheers!

I wouldn't believe anyone who says they don't have some half painted figures on the edge of their work area. It makes sense to have some to soak up the extra paint that is always squeezed out for a current project.

Of course…I tend to have several projects going at the same time. When I get bored with one, I move to the other. But I do the same thing as you…I can use the other figures to soak up the paint, or, if I'm in the groove for something in particular, I move on.

A handful that go astray from a painting batch

Yes. Lots. Every so often I do a painting session where I only work on half completed figures. It really helps to clear out some of the clutter.

No I try to do one project then move onto another. However, as my fiancé likes to paint big things sometimes, I do have some half painted 20mm tanks around.
I'm still painting Calpe Prussians, only 160+ to go…

A few.

OK, a few dozen.

It's a fair cop, a few score…

No, I stick to one batch at a time, then move on. Never had any half-painted figures while I'm working on others. Guess I'm in the minority there. -Steve

Not only do I have a good amount of, "works in progress" but I have a few hundred black or grey primed figures.

Legions – I paint for enjoyment and quite often I find another project takes my interest for a time. In some cases a long time. It helps (hurts) having a painting station with lots of storage.

Chgowiz04 Aug 2015 6:31 a.m. PST

Primed, yes. I have about 100 or so black or grey minis. But I usually finish what I start.

I have a few every once in awhile. I don't paint in large batches and I try to finish what I have put on the painting sticks.

Masses of half- painted! Just about to clear away 2 or 3 hundred 6mm Napoleonics, which are proving a severe challenge for old eyes. That will give me a chance to finish off some 15mm SYW Hanoverians, which have been " half-painted since August 2012.
I have a wargaming friend who never starts another project until he has finished one- no lead mountain, no half- painted figures, no figures waiting months to be based. Seems unnatural to me, I can see the benefits but I am attracted by too many different periods to be that disciplined.

I don't put them on the table. It demoralises me! I have plenty, just don't put them out unless I'm likely to paint them. I do batch paint though so when I'm painting there will be figures in various stages of completion on hand but they are being worked on, or will be once the right colour is on the palette, well I say palette, it's actually a couple of old instant coffee jar lids. I like the way the pattern of little dots grabs the pigment when I colour mix.

I've realised that for me slogging through a single project from beginning to end – which I've done, albeit with smallish armies – makes the hobby less fun than it should be – tedious in fact

I'm embracing the multiple project idea – 4 on the go at the moment: 20mm EIR with Celt and German enemies. 28mm ACW skirmish. 28 mm Saxon/Viking/Norman/Irish for DBA. And I've painted a prototype for possible Lion Rampant Mongols! The unfinished are packed near to the table, but not on it.

Little gaming, lots of painting.
