My Republican Roman Army is now complete and I have posted lots of photos on my blog. It is entirely made up of 28mm metal figures from Aventine, I realise there are lots of exciting new plastics around but I am a bit of a dinosaur and still prefer the look and feel of metals.

I was going to base them all for Impetus but I am using Bigredbats "To the strongest rules" on a 150mm grid system. whilst 120mm bases work perfectly on my grid, the maniples are "small units" in these rules, so I decided to go with 8 figures on an 80x50 mdf base for each maniple. This will give me the ability to deploy them in the checkerboard (two small units per box) fashion and I am keen to see how they match up to a pike army in the near future.

There are lots more photos on my blog:

Nicely presented. I particularly like the sword marks on the shields. Cool

For my army, I've also gone for an eight mini maniple too.

That's how I base my Republican Romans too (two 4X2's). Then the front line expands. Looks good on the board.

They look great.
If I ever attempt a Republican army I'll be copying your setup. Very good mix of aesthetics and practicality.

Much better setup then my romans, i did it the lazy way.

Each line is 2 units, so one unit of hastati, is about 600 men, and i got two of them. So 2 units hastati, 2 pricipes and 1 triarii. Each unit 20 strong, given exactly 100 infantry per legion.
