I picked up some Xyston Galleys at Historicon and have been mulling over what to do with them. I don't want to do Salamis or other huge battles and I went for vanilla Greek and Phoenician Triremes.

I am contemplating writing a very simple set of rules using the movement sticks from x-wing. Damage is restricted to collisions and would be based on speed of the strike.

Is there already a set of rules out there that would work for 5-10 ships per side?

I also have a free set of fast play rules that I can post if you let me know an email address to which I can send them

Free download from the freewargames site. Very good rules set with individual ship forms for the main type of galleys.

David,

I've been playing a modified version of your Salamis ad Actium with my Roman Seas ships at conventions and would love to see your fast play rules.

I've bought Galleys and Galleons, and read through it, but not given it a go on the table yet. It looks very promising, particularly since I'm a fan of the "Song of …" system in general. It's certainly a fast and easy system in other genres, and looks to be one for naval gaming as well. The rules are written with a focus on pirates and merchantmen etc, but there is a little coverage of ancient galleys, and the author has mentioned providing more statted-out ships for the period soon. This one is high on my list of to-dos, most likely with the Roman Seas 1/300 paper model ships.

I'm also fond of the old AH Trireme rules. The game can sometimes be found on eBay. If you like old school systems, with hexes and factor ratios and CRTs, then this might be your cup of tea.

Metagaming's Ram Speed is also good (and can be found online somewhere, I believe – I got a copy of the original box off of eBay), and is something like Trireme-lite.

Roman Seas is a good set, and I believe there was mention recently of a newer edition in the works, which will play somewhat faster.

Naumachiae is supposedly the ultimate set of rules for this genre, but is also supposedly VERY crunchy (I've not read them), so probably not what you want.

Almost anything. There really aren't that many rules sets suited to battles with more than 5-10 galleys per player (War Galley, Greek Fire and Roman Fury, the "big battle" rules in Trireme, Corvus, Fleet of Battle, sort of Warring Fleets by THW).
