These are the Federation ships I have acquired for my Full Thrust conversion. They are lined up according to miniature size. There is a closeup picture of each ship, with calculated length, actual length, and manufacturer information.

I used a Galaxy class as the baseline. It was supposed to be 4" long, but once I actually had one in hand it measured 3.72" long. This kind of problem proved to be an endemic one – there is much misleading information on the Internet about actual miniature size versus claimed. Nonetheless, I did the best I could to obtain miniatures as close as possible to the calculated length.

The Steamrunner and Norway classes are significantly shorter than calculated; at the time I could not find a Steamrunner closer to the appropriate size. So I tried to have the Norway scaled a little smaller than the Steamrunner. They were to be both mass 80 ships, but after seeing the Norway in person, it became obvious that the ship didn't have the "bulk" to warrant mass 80.

I am tempted to obtain larger Steamrunners and Norways; they seem to be available now on Shapways, but the cost is higher.

I also am missing a Prometheus model. The only ones seem to be Star Trek Attack Wing or old Heroclix models, and the price is kind of high. That and the Star Trek Attack Wing model's paintjob is atrocious and I am not in the mood to buy one and repaint it at this time. I will continue to look for a suitable sized model though.

I did not list Shapeways links; you'll have to look for them yourself, unfortunately. There is a company here that is contractually obligated to report suspected Trek piracy to CBS/Paramount, and since they seem to operate under a rather overly broad definition of infringement, they may well inadvertently report/hassle sellers that are CBS-compliant. I don't want to bring down the wrath of CBS on those who may not be infringing. I will note that I wish that CBS/Paramount had insisted on some consistency in scales when they licensed miniatures. I would have dearly loved to be able to buy most/all of my miniatures from licensed sources, but alas they are frequently not available in the scale/size I wanted. It was a tremendous amount of work to determine which miniatures would be the best choice in my chosen scale, with a fair bit of inaccuracies in reported sizes, leading to wasted purchases. Improving this situation would only help CBS get some more sales.

Without further ado:

The Fleet lined up side by side:

Cruisers and larger lined up:

Frigates and smaller lined up:

Sovereign (Enterprise-E). Calculated length is 4.2, actual size is 5.33". Made by Furuta.

Galaxy Class (Enterprise-D). Calculated length is 4", actual size is 3.72. Made by Furuta.

Ambassador class (Enterprise-C). Calculated length is 3.36", actual size is 3.08". Made by Shapeways, but is no longer available.

Excelsior class (Enterprise-B). Calculated length is 2.88", actual size is 3.01". Made by Furuta, this is a series 3 ship (not the larger one).

Akira class. Calculated length is 2.88", actual size is 2.87". Made by Shapeways

Nebula class. Calculated length is 2.76", actual size is 2.5". Made by Furuta.

Intrepid class (Voyager). Calculated length is 2.125", actual size is 2.52". This is a Star Trek Attack Wing model.

Steamrunner Heavy Frigate. Calculated length is 2.32", actual size is 1.78". Made by Shapeways

Miranda class (Reliant). Calculated length is 1.72", actual size is 1.75". Made by Shapeways

Norway class. Calculated length is 2.24", actual size is 1.68". Made by Shapeways

Saber class. Calculated length is 1.36", actual size is 1.36". Made by Shapeways.

Defiant class. Calculated length is .75", actual size is .64". Made by Ender at Starshipadversaries

Danube class runabouts. I am handling these as gunboats, in 3-ship half squadrons. Actual size is .50". Made by Shapeways

Federation Attack fighters (Peregrine class). These are handled as gunboats, in 3-ship half squadrons. These are Star Trek Attack Wing models, and are about .7" long.

I hope this information proves to be useful to someone trying to assemble a The Next Generation Federation fleet. I will be posting my Klingon fleet in the near future, so stay tuned. :D

Those look really good. I am glad you got settled on a scale. It is a tough choice.

They look great and – even for a scale nazi like me – they are close enough to a least work quite well.

Great work: have fun!

Great looking ships, a lot of dedication there!

You have done much better matching your TNG ships than I did. Congratulations and thank you for the size information.

Maltz: Impressive!

The Furuta, especially, will make for a very full table, but I'm looking forward to the next fleet, and ultimately… the AARs! ;->=

Thanks guys. I actually own more than one of most of the ships; I just was finally able to complete one of each type so I could put up a ship lineup. I've actually got close to 30 Federation ships total, though a few are still being painted.

Klingons, have 6 Ktingas, a couple Vor'Cha, and a second Negh'Var on the table awaiting completion. That and perhaps a dozen more B'rel scouts.

It definitely was a MAJOR pain in the rear finding ships that were kinda of matching scale-wise.

Very nice!

Nice! Time for an AAR !

billclo30 Jul 2015 5:21 p.m. PST

Have to tinker with the Klingons and make new SSDs first, then the second round of testing shall commence. You know how it is, Jim. :)

Shapeways had better watch out if they are allowing openly "Trek" ships to be sold there. Paramount's IP police are likely to pay then a visit

billclo31 Jul 2015 2:38 a.m. PST

David, it's happened before, and it'll happen again. CBS visits and purges the place, and the ships pop up again later on. Some modify their designs to be different enough that CBS leaves them alone (like the designer of the Runabouts did, or the designer of the Akira), and some take their chances. I was told that generally if the miniature is about 20% different it's usually okay.

It's a game of whack-a-mole basically. People want to buy what they want, and if CBS isn't offering it people want then they'll get it somehow. Not endorsing it, but saying it what it is – a missed business opportunity for CBS.

So many tiny, tiny, details. They look great.

Final Federation fleet as of now:

Here is the full Federation fleet:

Top row: incomplete Sovereign, Galaxy, Sovereign, Ambassador
2nd row: 3 Nebula, Intrepid (missing an Prometheus, which I am keeping an eye out for)
3rd row: 2 Akira, 3 Excelsior
4th row: 2 Norway, 4 Steamrunners
5th row: 4 Miranda, 2 Defiant, 2 squadrons Runabouts
6th row: 4 Saber, 4 squadrons of Peregrine fighters

It's a great fleet.

billclo21 Aug 2015 3:07 a.m. PST

Thanks. Took a great deal of work finding the ships in reasonably decent size matches. But I think it turned out well.
