Technically, this is a short take-off followed by a steep climb. A vertical take-off means the aircraft lifts off without any ground-based forward motion. As with this famous aircraft, an earlier model of which I believe you had some first-hand experience of during your military career (smile).

If I remember right that was how the F-15 was suppose to launch ASATS. On it's tail at the end of the runway all the way up to max ceiling.
