My gaming table is very utilitarian. It is a ping pong table covered with automotive carpeting. I also use it to build and paint on, and sometimes laundry. So terrain has to be flexible and put-away-able. Lots of foam hills, Lemax ground mats cut up for forest boundaries, etc. So I was shopping at Hobby Lonby and saw a roll of 12"x24" cork mat. I bought it thinking "what the heck", thinking it would always have the curl from being rolled up. Surprise! As soon as I unrolled it it lay flat. So I measured the width of a Flames of War artillery base and found it was just under 2" wide. I cut 12 2"x12" road sections and spray painted them flat black. It also occurs to me that if I flip them over, they are the original cork brown. Let's see how long they last. But at least I now have some asphalt roads for the next game. Apologies to anyone who is already using them and thinking "Duh!" |

Cork's great stuff. Painting it/soaking it with PVA increases its durability. John T |

It occurs to me how Prussian that sounds. Adjusting road width for military necessity. |

John, Excellent suggestion. I've considered using roofing shingles but am leery of the "tar" leaching onto my table covering. With the coupon one can print from HL's web site, I may have to look into that as a solution to asphalted roads. Thanks, Jim |

How thick is the mat? I assume that if it can be rolled & is thin enough for roads, it' probably about 1/16"? |

This is probably it: link Thickness is 3/32" (2.4mm), so your guess was very close. Jim |

I've been using it for roads. Perhaps I'll paint some with diluted PVA as suggested above. |
