Rummaging over photos of the TAG Valois Legion pike and shot. I know little about the period. Can anyone recommend a source book about them and / or a painting guide? |

Charles Oman, History of the Art of War in the Sixteenth Century, is always a good starting point if you don't know the period. A bit light on detail, and actual fact, but a good read. |

My fall back resource for Renaissance painting guides is Funken's Age of Chivalry, mostly volumes 2 and 3. |

By no means a painting guide, but "Renaissance France at War" by David Potter is a detailed work covering the formation and service of the French legions of this era. Not necessarily organised in the most logical fashion, but it can be used to untangle the misleading terminology associated with the army of the Valois kings. |

There wasn't much uniformity, except for the common filth that they all wore. Be sure to use your imagination, but remember that many modern colors are the result of chemistry. So stick with natural colors with small accents. |
