Perhaps rather late, but Soldiers of God, my card-driven rules for fighting the Crusades, are now out and available from; North Star Figures, Warlord Games, Gripping Beast, Plastic Soldier Company and Perry Miniatures (in a week or two). Various retailers and shops will also get stock (via North Star). On Military Matters are selling in the US.

For more info check out the (inevitable) fb page – Artorus Games and I'll be putting stuff up on my blog too –

Any questions, shoot away, I'm happy to answer.

Thanks for the news. Based on how much I enjoyed the Battlegroup series, I will be ordering this right away.

I assume a raid would be the smallest game. How many figures per side (or elements) would be average? How many turns would a game take and how much real time?

Similar estimates for a stand up battle? Siege assault?

I'm just looking for general estimates.

Myself and Warwick played a 150 point game in about 2 hours, with me learning the rules.

Saw a copy today in Firestorm Games – very pretty.

coopman27 Jul 2015 3:28 p.m. PST

I got my copy from OMM two days ago. Great looking set of rules.

GunRunner28 Jul 2015 2:40 p.m. PST

Just got mine today, look excellent and great fun. Will you set-up a forum for FAQ and the like?

WarwickK229 Jul 2015 10:43 a.m. PST

Raids are the smallest, quickest games. Field Battles are either small or large, siege assaults are always large.

Once you have learnt the rules, a small field battle is designed to be an evenings gaming so, 2 hours. The other day one was over in an hour… but it was a slaughter -oops!. Larger games are 3-4 hours (an afternoon, or a long evening).

Turns are irrelevent for timing, the game doesn't ever end on turn-length, it has a build-in break point.

No forum yet, but it is worth considering eventually. Although I'm hoping there isn't much in the rules to question… I think it's straight forwards enough.

When a unit retires, does it end its move facing the same direction that it originally had at the time that the card was played, or does it end up facing towards what was originally its rear?

cytaylor06 Aug 2015 12:25 p.m. PST

Do I need single based figures? The sample game on the BlogSpot showed that to be the case for cavalry in skirmish order.

coopman08 Aug 2015 7:58 a.m. PST

No, you can use bases with multiple figures on them. Each unit is composed of 2 to 4 bases, and the no. of figures on each base does not matter.

Looking forward to reading your review after several plays.

Oops, sorry about not remembering the original post WarwickK2. I was hoping this thread was a review. I checked with 2 local hobby stores and neither have your rule in stock yet. Soon… soon… hopefully.

Rules well produced and look promising.

Odd decision to omit a separate QRS. I don't want to damage the rule book by removing the page from the book.

Is there a link to a PDF?

SylvainIndiana21 Aug 2015 4:22 p.m. PST

I just received my copy from OMM. It looks like an amazing ruleset.
Painting Saracens now. I cannot wait to play. I like the breaking point concept like in battlegroup.

Sir Mumsy13 Sep 2015 7:04 p.m. PST

I just purchased my copy on Saturday, but will not be able to get a thorough reading in until sometime this week. Can't wait!

How good are these rules in reproducing the crusader 'boxed formation' like at Arsuf?

uglyfatbloke15 Sep 2015 2:44 p.m. PST

Would they be suitable for a wider period? We'd love to find something good for 1290-1340 or thereby.

Being card-driven I imagine it would be difficult to adapt without constructing an entirely new deck for your chosen era from scratch.

A better bet might be Deus Vult, which openly declares itself suitable for any feudal era campaign, and for which non-Crusades European army lists have been published on the Fireforge website.

Hi

Recently bought the rules and, after the first try out game at the club, are an instant hit.
I have some questions, particularly, regarding the Siege scenario.
Where would be the best place to post these?

Regards

Tony Cane

I would like to print off a pdf copy of the QRD for these rules, I have bought the rules but the one in the book is too small and attached to the book.

I can scan, upsize to A4 and print but working from an original pdf QRD would be a lot better

Is there one to download anywhere.

Rules look good BTW, intend to try them out in a weeks time.

Andy
