As part of today's batch of updates regarding the immediate future of BattleTech, the first set of blurbs were posted to the Coming Releases page for the Combat Manuals – a series of faction-specific expansions for the Alpha Strike game system:

So far, volumes for Mercenaries, Davion, Steiner, and Kurita have been written up. Presumably more factions will be added as time goes on.

Oh, and as with the IO cover, the "classic" 'Mech designs on the Combat Manual: Mercenaries cover shown above represent the start of a new wave of re-designs intended to supersede the old "Unseens" in a more IP-friendly manner.

I'm not sure what I think about that. For years the so called unseens WERE Battletech. Moving away from the originals is a sad thing. I get why they are doing it though- so they can do the Succession Wars historicals. But still, it's just wrong in a way to do these wars without the unseens.

However it will be cool to see what they do with these designs so that these classic mechs can truly rejoin the BT universe. The Warhammer does look really cool and it does catch the essence of the Warhammer of yore! Plus being able to get them again with our resorting to ebay will be nice.

It will truly rock if these new mechs find themselves in Alpha Strike lance sets. I would be all over that!

CGL has posted a beta PDF for BattleTech – Combat Manual: Mercenaries.

Picked it up, neat little book, great resource for Alpha Strike players, not a lot of 'new' information for experienced Btech players. Definitely the closest thing we've ever seen to an 'army book' for Battletech, and I think the model will work well.

What I've seen of all the re-re-seens (several others are in this book, in addition to the Warhammer) I *really* like, also definitely hope we see plastics for all of them.

Woah, that looks like a return to the unseen Marauder I see back there. Did they make an acceptable redesign of the Unseen again that looks like but are legally different from the originals?

Here's a pic of the re-re-seen Marauder:
