Can anyone explain to me what that baggy helmet cover is all about? I would assume it is to break up the outline of the helmet. I would be interested to know what the troops think about it.

Hi Hocklermp5

Yes the baggy helmet cover is designed to breakup the helmet outline.

They have been using this for a while in all their terrain types so I suspect it must be effective for them.

Not my scale and they look kinda lumpy.

I think that one's a girl and those are boobs.

The M4 carbine carried by the Stinger missileer looks funny. Lumpy, in fact.

The "bag" helmet covers look like they would work. But I can't help but wonder if they get hung up on things. I've done some reenacting over the years and found that normal headgear such as caps, helmet nets etc can get snagged on low tree branches and the like. It looks like that deflated baker's hat looking cover might be prone to that.

Martin Wolverton….Every time I see a photo of the "bag" I think the same thing, it will hang up on anything sticking out or down from aboveor from the side. Since it appears no other army has adopted it my guess is it will fade away. The Israelis seem to be very pragmatic about uniforms and equipment and the "bag" is anything but pragmatic. I noticed in a news photo a few weeks ago where Israeli soldiers were rushing a wounded man to an ambulance that half the men in the rather large group wore the bag while the rest wore the Israeli Kevlar with net and inner tube band around the bottom of the helmet. That piece of kit goes back to around 1982 in Lebanon. Before that they used the net and band on the US M1 helmet.

IDF friend of mine told me the helmet cover was supposed to be for snipers originally--part of specialist camo gear.

Now everybody has one, apparently. The guys wearing older kit are likely reservists.
