In the almost 2 years I've been with my fiance this movie has been mentioned by my often and never never NEVER in a good light. I do walk alot of history with her, and so the patriot come up as everythnig that is wrong…

So finnaly she said, "NOW I have to watch it, you keep talking about how bad it is, yet I havn't seen it"

So I found it cheap and bought it when I orderd some other stuff from the same online store.

I have warned her that she will not be able to watch it with out my colorful profanity laden commentaries.

… with out my colorful profanity laden commentaries.

That's the only way to watch it.

That's how Mel watches it. grin

ironicon22 Jul 2015 10:03 a.m. PST

Poorly acted, poorly written, poorly directed. Why would you want to waste your time?

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP22 Jul 2015 10:27 a.m. PST

That's how Mel watches it. grin

But unnlike Mel, I won't be watching while I down a gallon of bad whiskey while stroking my nazi memorabilia.

Dave Crowell22 Jul 2015 10:27 a.m. PST

It is not so much that the Patriot is bad history, so is Last of the Mohicans. It is that the Patriot is bad movie making.

Blazing Saddles is bad history. Monty Python and the Holy Grail is bad history. Both are good movie making. Robin Hood (the Douglas Fairbanks or Errol Flynn version) is bad history but good movie making.

The Patriot is so bad that when I went to rematch it, I couldn't make it ten minutes in.

Oddball22 Jul 2015 11:51 a.m. PST

The only movie that shows how the British really behaved during the Revolution. A film masterpiece for the whole family and should be used in history classes.

Why not, Inglorious Bastads, was used by "teachers" in schools for W.W. II history when it came out.

nevinsrip22 Jul 2015 11:55 a.m. PST

I watch it everytime I come across it while looking for a time killer.
I like it. It's a movie. Get over it.

I guess I'm odd, but I like the movie. I own the blu-ray. Nev is right. Get a grip. It's just a movie.

raylev322 Jul 2015 12:46 p.m. PST

Other's got it…it's a movie, not history.

But between The Patriot and Braveheart, you gotta' figure Mel has something against the Brits. If you liked Braveheart, you'll get past the issues in The Patriot.

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP22 Jul 2015 12:52 p.m. PST

Problem is the movie falls right into thr myth of the war, and lots of Americans belive the movie to be factual.
and it is a special movie in that i think it's the only one ever, to get EVERYTHING wrong.

WarWizard22 Jul 2015 1:54 p.m. PST

I have never been able to watch it a second time.

hocklermp522 Jul 2015 3:05 p.m. PST

I dearly love movies and have usually found something worthwhile in even the poorest of them. "The Patriot" was one of the very small number that I turned off before the end. It was during the scene where he is melting his murdered son's lead soldiers to mold into bullets. It came to me what I was watching was a man's descent into madness, the first example having been in the ambush where he goes berserker hacking up dead men while his sons look on in horror. I should have killed it then but I watched on. As above stated it is just a movie but I found little of redeeming value in wading through it to the end.

B6GOBOS22 Jul 2015 3:17 p.m. PST

Sometimes I like back history. Battles of the Bulge is so incorrect and the character are so stereotype that it fun. The patriot? Bad movie back plot bad people. Stay away. Watch April Morning or The Crossing instead if you must have your AWI fix.

I enjoy it,factual, probably not in the least of course I wasn't there like some here must have been as they know everything that happened during the war.

It's a bad movie, get over it.

COL Scott ret22 Jul 2015 10:42 p.m. PST

I watched it knowing that it was not historical (few movies are) or a great production (few movies are).

I have learned over time that no one really wants to hear my comentary during the movie, so if I have comments I wait. That is just being polite.

When my wife and I watched it she said at the end, "I know it is not 100% historical but it helps me to understand why Soldiers might have to leave their family to go fight a war." Then she said "if you ever get orders again to deploy, have us watch this before you tell me."

The point is my wife knows it is not purely historical but the message she got was that regardless of how much you may want peace there are times when someone has to place their body between the horrors of war and home.

The Patriot, Braveheart, Kingdom of Heaven, King Arthur… Watch'em all. I regret the money and time I wasted on them.

Ironwolf23 Jul 2015 2:51 a.m. PST

My family and I watch movies for entertainment, not education. hahaha So is it my favorite AWI movie, no. Do I find it entertaining, yes.

Dave Crowell23 Jul 2015 5:22 a.m. PST

Kingdom of Heaven I enjoyed. King Awful made me reel in horror. Braveheart is a silly, fun romp.

It's not about the history. Although Monty Python's Life of Brian is better history than the Patriot. It is also funnier.

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP23 Jul 2015 8:44 a.m. PST

Life if brian is problebly the most historicaly correct "bible" film made.

Except mabye jesus christ superstar!

Kingdom of heaven is typical hollywood same with king arthur(only worse) Breavheart is stupid and anti english.

But to make Patriod a period with GREAT info.

When I watched it for the first time as 15, I loved it, it was bloody and "big battles" But the battles are so silly, never have any horse and musket battle looked like that…

It's like the movie should have been made during the AWI as patriot propaganda.

I guess i personaly hate it because I felt lied to, I was a norwegian 15 year old, what chance did I have to know better,

My anger got bigger when I learned it often is used in american history classes during their AWI classes…

I honestly think Mel was toying with the idea of giving the british grey uniforms, having Cornwallies be called Reich marskalk Von Cornwallies and having them do Nazi salutes.

Norman D Landings23 Jul 2015 12:48 p.m. PST

An oddity among Mel Gibson's historical roles, in that he refrains from hooking up with a love interest who would have been an infant at the time.

Something of a slight to the real heroes of the AWI, none of whose actual exploits were deemed film-worthy.
Combine the exploits of a bunch of them, though? NOW you've got a role deserving of Mr Gibson's talents.

Zargon23 Jul 2015 1:39 p.m. PST

So the Scots didn't win the ACW/AWI? Now I'm confused, but not the kids in the American education system, I'm sure they getting taught Julius Caesar resides in Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, ah sad is it for modern history teaching indeed :/ BTW. never saw El Patrioto rather watch Master and Commander again, now that was entertainment, when they were playing Cat and mouse with the Frenchie frigate, now that was very well done, kudos to all in that movie (believe it got 90% on the reality rating too) As for Herr Mel, he could get a reprieve if he pays his Scientology subs :D
Cheers all, Favourite Bulge movie was 'A Midnight Clear' brilliant gents well worth a watch.

vtsaogames23 Jul 2015 6:50 p.m. PST

About the time Mel whacked a whole company of redcoats single-handed, my wife got up and left, saying it was stupid. I watched the rest of the film and wished I'd joined her. Bad history, bad movie. That's my two cents.

Borderguy19020 Sep 2015 8:03 p.m. PST

Angry patrons like some of ya'll in this thread are one of the reasons I come less and less to this forum. You have to spew your hate of everything, offer no constructive criticisms, nor alternatives you find more enjoyable, and in truth contribute nothing to decent conversation.

I honestly don't care what you like or dislike, I come looking for discussion of history, uniforms. OOBs, battles and minis. Yet every other thread is "I hate FoW" "I hate Mel", "I hate GW", "these rules suck, mine are better".

Grow up, keep your hate to yourself, and please, for the love of all that is holy, find a girl and do stuff with her.

Supercilius Maximus21 Sep 2015 9:22 p.m. PST

OK, but in return you have to promise to stop sitting at your computer all day wearing only your underpants (or at least put a fresh pair on once or twice a year), eat some fruit and vegetables, and above all stop using straw men and ridiculous hyperbole to judge people you've never met and about whom you seem to know even less than you do about the typical content of TMP.

Deal?
