Do you have a preferred physical size for printed rule books? (ie not pdfs)

eg A4, like SOBH and many others? B5, like Osprey rule books?
Other sizes?

Or it doesnt matter?

A4 or 8 1/2x11 (US) I prefer best.

B5

A4

I don't know that it's my favorite, but I'm liking Osprey's format.

The thicker, hardbound Frostgrave is pretty snazzy, and quite handy.

A4, softcover.

Those huge hardcover rules take up far too much valuable shelf space.

A4 seems most natural, though I do like teh charm of a mini "pocket book" style.

But a nice A4, easy to read, spiral bound, is hard to beat.

My preference is for rules that fit on a maximum of two sides of A4 in 14 point Arial, so I can read the thing!
As nobody could make any money from that format, I'll go with the A4 spiral bound and make a plea for proper indexing. It is infuriating to have to spend 10 minutes finding clarification of a rule when you are about to outflank the Imperial Guard. I know it costs money to have proper indexing done, but these rule books are not cheap- typically £25.00 GBP to £35.00 GBP in UK. Surely that gives some margin for producing an index, especially when most of the printing is done by cheap overseas companies.

Thin ones.

I agree with the Major!

Just so.

I like 8-1/2 x 11 loose, hole punched and ready to go into a binder. Graphs, charts, tables on separate sheets so they are easy to copy for game use. A cardstock front and back cover make it more secure for the publisher and retailer and give the buyer a cover to slip into binder sleeves.

Neat binding is difficult to work with in a game situation and breaks easily. Spiral binding adds cost and creates some shipping/packaging issues.

#1 feature would be "Free of charge." But I guess that might be asking a little too much!

12 pages 3/4" margins, single spaced, 12 pt Times Roman Bold, everything, all charts, tables, rules, illustrations, photographs,(if any) cover art, sidebars and desogmer drivel in that booklet.

And Oh yes, Zone of control, all my rules are free of charge. You just have to ask for them.

Size doesn't matter, nor does length. I have read 80 page rule books that felt like a breeze and when done I actually understood how to play. I have read 10 page rule books that required several Tylenol to parse just how to move the troops.

I've read 8x11 pages that looked like they came out of a blender (Infinity) and pocket sized rules that were crystal clear.

I don't care as long as they are nice rule books. I am way past buying xeroxed copies and much prefer hardbacks with lots of nice photos of painted models in action. Really gets me pumped up to paint!

+1 Nazrat.

Too hard a question.
But whatever my choice i want all the books for said game to be the same size. Superiority book comes to mind.

8 1/2 x 11 spiral bound to lay flat.

XcaliburNick23 Jul 2015 10:16 p.m. PST

I love the size of the Flames of War pocket rulebook. If not that, then whatever as long as all the books are the same size like Grimmnar said.

kevanG24 Jul 2015 3:51 a.m. PST

any is fine.

A5 booklet to A4 in any format is okay.

I do prefer a bigger typeset

MH Dee25 Jul 2015 9:11 p.m. PST

I'm not that picky, but I do like the Osprey hardback rule sets. They feel nice. But I'm game for a variety of sizes.
