I have a sudden interest in the Scottish uprising of 1745 and thanks to the May issue of Wargamers Illustrated and its paper troops I have potential armies available too. Has anyone ever produced a board game for it or campaign rules? |

I'm sure I have seen a copy of an old game called "Bonnie Prince Charlie" in the past few weeks. |

I am in the middle of producing a Jacobite Rebellion set-up at present. I will probably start with historical battles (just finished painting all of the figures for Prestonpans, and plan to expand this to Falkirk, Culloden and various minor actions). I have planned a further expansion into the War of Austran Succession, but that is a long term aspiration, although I have already bought most of the figures. I wanted some way of playing a campaign so bought "The 45" board game from Decision Games. I actually bought it on e-bay, but in new condition. I plan to use it for manoeuvring, then fight the battle with real figures rather than card counters. It basically comprises a map of UK with card counters (at battalion/regiment level) for every unit which actually fought, or conceivably could have fought (ie it includes units for the British Army defending England, so a Battle of Finchley Common is possible). It also includes Dutch and Hessian troops, and I quite like the scenario of a Hessian push through the Pass of Killiecrankie to relieve the siege of Blair Atholl Castle. There are also French reinforcement troops, including the whole of the Irish Brigade, so various "what if" scenarios could be played. There are some ship counters for engagements at sea (eg interception of French reinforcements etc). Some reviews say that "The 45" board game is complex to play, and you really have to know your history. That does not bother me since I will use it only as a campaign tool, and I do know the history of the 45. Rod |

Old Glory publishes a two part Volley and Bayonet supplement written by Frank Chadwick of GDW fame, that includes the historical background, Jacobite Rebellion rules mods, eleven scenarios for historical and hypothetical battles (with orders of battle), army organisation, uniform info, and a full campaign system with point-to-point maps of Scotland and England and five campaign options: four sub-campaigns (e.g. the invasion of England), and the entire '45. It shouldn't be too difficult to adapt it for other rule sets. |

By all means look at the Red Sash site. Chock full of information that you can download for free. They have sources and info I've never even had a wiff of---and I have a doctorate in the period. |

Back in 1995, Decision Games produced 'The '45, The Jacobite Rebellion'. It covers the entire campaign and isn't too difficult to learn. It's an ok game, but not great. TomS. |
