Rant on:

Peninsular is an adjective, peninsula is a noun.
The Peninsular War was fought in the Iberian Peninsula (not the Peninsular).

Postmen walk a route, panicked soldiers rout.

Calvary is another name for Golgotha, scene of the crucifixion while cavalry are mounted soldiers.

Rant off.

Schogun20 Jul 2015 8:04 a.m. PST

Add to the list the correct pronunciation of "melee."

may-lay or mel-ay

Not mee-lee.

My rant off.

JimDuncanUK20 Jul 2015 8:10 a.m. PST

Postmen here walk a 'walk' but otherwise you are largely correct.

When I was working I used to check over web paragraphs written by academic staff who were in professorial positions. I used to 'shudder' at the spelling and the grammar.

And it sometimes gets much worse for those who did not get an intense educational experience.

It's "a couple OF things…" not "a couple things…"….

1 rant done….

Uhm … the "backwards R" and "backwards "N" in the Cyrillic alphabet are not only not R's and N's, but also not consonants.

And the P isn't a P. It's an R

Rant off for me.

Everyone else … rant on!

Ga(i)tors are reptiles, not leg coverings.

"I could HAVE done it" not "I could of…"

"Lieb" instead of "Leib"!grrrrr!

Troops fail their "morale". Whether it is "moral" is a matter for theologians to decide.

abelp0120 Jul 2015 10:48 a.m. PST

It's "valla con Dios" NOT "viya con Dios"

JimDuncanUK20 Jul 2015 12:20 p.m. PST

@Abel

Google suggests: Vaya Con Dios

What are we talking about here?

John the Greater20 Jul 2015 1:13 p.m. PST

It's "valla con Dios" NOT "viya con Dios"

I think you mean Valhalla con dios

"Scuze me while I kiss the sky."

Not, "Scuze me while I kiss this guy."

Jimmy Hendrix – Purple Haze

Supercilius Maximus20 Jul 2015 2:16 p.m. PST

"I could HAVE done it" not "I could of…"

And in similar vein – "I'm fed up WITH telling you not to do that" not "I'm fed up OF telling you……"

Using an apostrophe to indicate a plural. It's trucks NOT truck's!

Kelly Armstrong21 Jul 2015 5:55 a.m. PST

their, their, it will be alright.

JimDuncanUK21 Jul 2015 6:54 a.m. PST

Sarcasm Kelly?

Jemima Fawr21 Jul 2015 8:26 a.m. PST

'Peninsular' and 'Peninsula' were both used as nouns at the time and personal accounts are full of "When I was in the Peninsular…". The use of 'Peninsular' as a noun is therefore correct in a historical context.

Just don't get me started on 'turrents'…

…or people who write "Here here!" (Where? Where?)

Andy Skinner Supporting Member of TMP21 Jul 2015 8:48 a.m. PST

I could care less about these rants!
(But just a little bit less.)

It literally blows my mind!
(Excuse me while I get the mop.)

Yes, of coarse that was sarcasm . . . it never ends.

They're they're!

Obivously.

Sarcasm is great, in small chunks:

Winston Smith22 Jul 2015 5:21 a.m. PST

Good thing it's not third declension.

Supercilius Maximus24 Jul 2015 5:45 a.m. PST

This thread ff uck f big time.

abelp0124 Jul 2015 8:00 p.m. PST

LOL, Yep, I dropped the ball on that one, yet it's still not "viya".

holdit26 Jul 2015 2:45 a.m. PST

"I couldn't care less", not "I could care less" (which actually makes no sense).

"Simple as that", not "Simple as"

"End of story" not "End of"

"Coup de grace" not "Coupe de grace"

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP26 Jul 2015 3:46 a.m. PST

What about the VW coupe de Grace? She lets me borrow it when she's out of town on business…

Footslogger27 Jul 2015 3:21 a.m. PST

Just stop calling me Shirley.

More important than any of these, how about
"I want to shamelessly indulge my whims by buying extra figures" instead of the correct "I NEED those new figures".

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP27 Jul 2015 11:26 a.m. PST

DOM: Need. I don't think that word means what you think it means.
