Has anyone tried Frostgrave for fantasy skirmishes not driven by magic yet? I like the quest idea and size of warbands, but am not so into my wizards that I want every player having one.

Does the combat system stand up if you're not using magic, Odis it really all about the magic?

I think you are describing Mordheim. Only the Wizard in Frostgrave truly levels. There's a sidekick apprentice and the rest are basically "extras".

I think it would work, but only if you add some advancement rules for the non-magical characters. Maybe the old charts from Mordheim could be adapted.

For me, the focus on wizards is one of the big draws though. It's a really unique approach to fantasy skirmish gaming.

Any explanations, AAR on a game of FG? After the trashing AoS I'd like to see how these compare (not:) and why guys would be better off doing FG and spending their mula in this system, do you get more bang for buck in it too?
Cheers

The combat system in Frostgrave is not dependent on magic what-so-ever. If you want to advance non-magical characters, you are playing Mordheim.

I had considered this, too.

My copy should arrive tomorrow, I will assess the matter then. I don't imagine it would be so hard to make a basic advancement system for "named" hirelings, which is what I plan to do, anyway. Those magic-weilding folk can't have all the fun.

And as for myself, I prefer to keep at least most all of Mordheim in the Warhammer world. When the author likened his mechanisms to oldschool D&D, I decided I really liked that route.

Thanks guys. Not knowing much about Mordheim other than it being GW game, is it tied to specific figures or can I bring my own tots to the table?

You can actually equip the extras with magical items and/or cast "buff" spells on them, so in a way the game allows for some differentiation between extras of the same class. The basic game of grabbing treasures and stopping the other side from doing the same is sound, but magic gives you more ways to skin a cat.

@Zargon Here's a game of Frostgrave I played last week.

Looks like with Frostgrave, you could keep a characters name and upgrade their soldier type as you earn rewards eg Thug to Infantryman to Knight.

@Ney Ney

Mordheim isn't tied to figures, other than generic dwarves, elves, humans. Skaven can be proxied with other manufacturers vermin. Some of the war bands you can take will limit you to certain model types – e.g. Flagellants in a Witch Hunter war band.

cloudcaptain20 Jul 2015 4:29 a.m. PST

Mordheim is free as well. There's quite a bit of variety for building human warbands. You could leave out the black powder weapons if they are too "modern" for your taste.

axabrax20 Jul 2015 7:22 a.m. PST

Agree with the Mordheim suggestion. Either that or you could try Pulp Alley, which basically skins well for just about any genre. Frostgrave is a game about dueling wizards. That's the whole premise.

Lee Brilleaux Fezian20 Jul 2015 7:42 a.m. PST

Yes, playing a game all about wizards while leaving out the wizards seems a bit, um, pointless.

Ney Ney20 Jul 2015 8:20 a.m. PST

Thank you everyone. Re the last two comments, yes that's what I was trying to find out. I want a fun system and everyone seems to love Frostgrave, so I don't see it as a pointless thing to ask. Just a beginners question.

Ney Ney20 Jul 2015 8:22 a.m. PST

@ Zargon…

I'm not sure Frostgrave will be a suitable replacement for Sigmar, as it seems to be much smaller warbands. Have you looked at kings of war, or the Saga or Lion Rampant fantasy variants?

Buff Orpington20 Jul 2015 10:36 a.m. PST

While Saga & Lion Rampant are both great skirmish games they have no advancement system.

You could take a look at Two Hour Wargames if you want less magic. Chain Reaction Swordplay is free and works well as an intro to the other games.

Ney Ney20 Jul 2015 3:36 p.m. PST

Thanks for the extra suggestion. Saga and Lion rampant were mentioned in response to someone looking for a warhammer AoSreplacement.
