"Buckingham Palace has said it is disappointed that footage from 1933 showing the Queen performing a Nazi salute has been released. The Sun has published the film which shows the Queen aged about seven, with her mother, sister and uncle. The palace said it was "disappointing that film, shot eight decades ago… has been obtained and exploited". The newspaper has refused to say how it got the footage but said it was an "important and interesting story"…" Full article here link Amicalement Armand |

… and this has what to do with miniature wargaming ? Possibly you agree with the Sun that this is a 'significant historical moment'. |

Proof that sometimes uncles can be a bad influence of the very wrong kind on an impressionable young mind! |

7 year old responsible for their actions ??? And a bit of history on the salute, it was not full of the bones of consternation it is today, even the americans did the salute to their flag when pledging their allegiance at that time, 1933. So Cheers Long live The Queen, and |

The England football team were made to give the Nazi salute when the played against Germany in front of Hitler in 1938, the team initially refused but were ordered to give the salute by the British ambassador in order to prevent friction between the two countries. As for Queenie, lots of Royal Family members were admirers of Hitler, maybe one of them whispered in her ear? |

True, Americans once did deliver the "Caesarian Salute" to the U.S. flag. I have seen at least one photo and read one account (G. Gordon Liddy) confirming this. I write "Caesarian Salute" because I once saw an illustration of the same salute, with that terminology, being shared between Napoleon and his soldiers. |

Without hearing what was being said hard to judge. There is a million miles between " And the silly Germans all march like this, how funny they look" and " Nice Mr Hitler when he wins the war that is going to happen in 6 years time, we will make everybody march like this". In 1933 how aware of what Germany was turning into would a 6 year old girl be? Are we all to be judged on games played as a child? Is a dumb story in a rag of a newspaper. |

Leaving aside the very high probability that the film was obtained illegally, claiming the justification of historical importance simply makes the paper and its editor look foolish. |

There is a story about the perception of and reaction to Nazism in the 1930s but this is not it. |

Nan said at the time, a lot of people did it in mockery or jest. she even did it. For background, Nan was from a liberal background that did not approve of the soap box blackshirts on the local common (that was Clapham Common). Being from a family that was in music hall. Several were in, or friends of members of famous "Fred Karno's army" (the Monty Python of the day), and so, like its two most famous alumni, Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin, the members were mostly Socialist or Jewish (though family was mostly Presbyterian) so their attitude towards the blackshirts can be well imagined. |

If you don't want to be exploited, don't do stupid stuff, and then try to keep it from getting released to the public. The young prince survived his dubious press, so I suspect the queen will too. |

I try to teach my children (who are about the same age) how to react appropriately to events they attend. One thing would be how to greet someone new. I presume this is exactly what was happening here. Either that or the queen had a very evolved right wing ideology at 6 !! |

Well, at least she wasn't photographed doing the Makarena. Isn't it possible they were making fun of the salute? They were probably goose-stepping around, kicking each other's keesters and laughing so hard they all fell to rolling around on the ground. I just don't think that the salute meant then what it came to mean years later. Just kids having fun. |

It's not "disappointing that film, shot eight decades ago… has been obtained and exploited", it's disappointing that anyone cares. |

I posted this story on my Facebook page over the weekend, with also a link to the Solway VBCW sourcebooks. My cousin, who used to play 40K when he was a kid, checked them out. Now he is saying he wants to get back int wargaming, doing VBCW stuff, and was asking about rules, figures etc.. So this story may have inadvertently gotten him into wargaming… |
