Interesting stuff on that page – does anyone have any experience with the Egyptian sets shown further down. The figures are Atlantic, but the reed boats and other accessories look useful.

Glad you found it interesting my friend.

I have bought many BUM boxes… their quality is not good as Italeri… but…

You can know more about them in the plastic soldier review.

I did have a look at PSR – my first stop for all things plastic (in 20mm!) – but they don't seem to like BUM much – at least the reviews are pretty sparse. Maybe they don't get sent review samples ? I don't know – but a lot of the sets weren't even listed ! Quite surprised by that as it is usually very comprehensive.

They are a very odd company but I still find their stuff very intriguing. Contrary to other 1/72 plastic manufacturers they had a very promising start with their SCW Foreign Legion and Republican Popular Army sets but then declined rather than improved.

The Republican militia was their third release and is still usable but lacks the detail of the first two. The rifles are just like broomsticks and I intend to replace them with spares from other manufacturers. Quite nice and lively poses and anatomy, some based on photos from the period. That was the last BUM set I bought.

After that they abandoned standard soft plastic for some weird stuff that reportedly just falls apart at the slightest handling. On top of that they reduced the number of figures per set and upped the price considerably, apparently justifying that with some "limited edition" spiel.

They also switched to a "playset" type format with large vac-form or resin diorama bases which I have no interest in at all – give me more figure sprues! Some of the new figures and vehicles were also clearly recognizable as copies or conversions of other manufacturers. Under license hopefully…

Not only that but they recycle their own stuff as conversions – the Carlist Requetes in the OP set are mostly their Spanish Foreign Legion with new beret heads and other changes.

Having said all that, if another company bought some of their moulds (sets such as their SCW "Security Forces", "Winter Infantry" "Nationalist Regular Army" and Russian Civil War Bolsheviks) and produced them in standard soft plastic with 36-48 figures per set at a decent price I'd buy heaps.

I have bought numerous BUM sets and I really love the "uniqueness" of their kits. I have to agree with everything Durruti has said, the quality can be a mixed bag IMHO.

The kits are rather over priced for what you get, but they are so one of a kind that I find myself purchasing them now and then as a guilty pleasure.

I recently purchased the Putilov-Garford RCW kit and found the quality of the resin model was great (have to admit, probably one of the favourite vehicle models in my collection)-but the six infantry which came with the kit were a disaster of the sculptor's art. That crazy material they use makes the figures very fragile, most of the rifle barrels had snapped off (But then I've purchased their Japanese 1900 Cavalry and they have been fantastic and paint up very well).

Yes, Crazyfrenchteacher, such interesting, less-visited conflicts they cover in this scale and plastic medium. Spanish Civil, Spanish American, French and Indian, Spanish Succession, Russian Civil, Jacobite, RMCP, Rif, Dumas Musketeers etc…

20thmaine: PSR seems to have given up on reviewing BUM anymore because of their erratic output. However their BUM page includes a lot of sets not formally reviewed by period or announced on the home or news pages:
