We ran a three table linked scenario at our clubs monthly games night. Thematically the allies we're trying to secure a mountain pass through the Bernhardt Line, three connected tables all using the Point Defense scenario. Each table had one Allied and one Axis force who used their own dice bag. Units were allowed to cross over the tables and the only flanking allowed was on the edges of the two end tables. The three tables synched up turns, although dice pulls were mostly done separately with some gentlemanly patience when units crossed tables. The match-ups were British Commandos against a hold-out Italian army, My US Army vs some pioneer Germans in Hanomags and some very lost Marines against a German force with a Panther and a Hanomag. It was a very hard fought draw with all three allied forces finally making it to a single objective on their tables on turn 6 and barely holding on. The allied left flank took a beating with the Italian mortars hitting with devastating fire from turn one on. Three turns of sixes to hit, sixes for HE and almost all wounds against the commandos. The commandos returned fire with completely ineffectual howitzer fire from their Churchhill AVRE until the end game, a flanking maneuver on turn 5 brought a squad of commandos and a flamethrower onto the left most objective. The center saw my US Army call in an airstrike on my own Sherman and get bogged down with my engineers and regular squads getting pinned out of use early on and only killing a couple of Germans. a very brave squad of US regular dashed up the center of the board to just barely take the objective on turn 6, only to rout to a flamethrower hit that the Germans couldn't have followed up into the objective due to rough ground. The Marines fought very well against overwhelming odds as my own opponent diverted two Hanomags with troops from my table to reinforce his friend, since I quickly became no threat. Two well placed airstrikes destroyed the Panther and took out one Hanomag, pinning the unit inside until the end of the game. A well timed and executed flank took the right most objective and held it well against a counter attack. A seventh turn would have seen the Germans retake the center objective easily, although both flanks were held down well by the Brits and the Marines. All in all a very fun scenario, we're already thinking about a Battle of the Bulge multi-table game for the future. In most other games this would have been a minor victory for the Axis, as the Allies lost enough steam to follow through the pass, and the Germans still solidly held the center board with the pass. The Allies certainly took a foothold, but the Axis could easily consolidate into the pass and hold out for a long time. A link to the picture album imgur.com/gallery/u505D/new |
