My plan is 28mm for land. Strictly small skirmishes. |

15mm..because it has been picked yet! |

Definitely 3mm IMHO. See examples of games at my blog: link |

For my gaming - Land 20mm as I have a truck load (literally) of models and terrain for C20/21 Naval 1/700 because I like models and have trouble seeing smaller Air 1/144 or 1/350 – I'm tending more to 1/350 |

15mm for skirmish or small scale tactical. 6mm for large scale tactical or operational. Cheers and good gaming. Rod Robertson. |

It used to be 28mm but I switched to 20mm there is just too much of it to go wrong. |

Used to game modern naval in 1/1. Now, I lean towards 1/2400 for figure scale, and about 1"=1000yds for ground scale. 15mm for ground combat. 1/600 for air. |

I don't play ultramodern, but for "moderns" (Cold war) I do 15mm and 3mm. No reason to change for the ultramoderns if I did it, I wager. |

25mm for skirmish as I picked up a bucket load of the Mongoose BF:EVO stuff. it's hard to find true 25mm stuff out there. I also have 6mm soviet and syrian forces for Cold War Commander and 3mm aircraft for use with AirWar C:21. |

Ultramodern tends to be the province of counter insurgency, so my chaps are 15mm for that. Proper moderns (ie 1960 to 1989) more tend to be massed tank battles, so 6mm and 2mm. |
nickinsomerset | 16 Jul 2015 4:00 a.m. PST |
Cold war – 20mm and 6mm, Ultra moderns – East Europe I should think 20 and 6mm, otherwise Iraq/AFg etc 28mm would suit, Tally Ho! |
Cosmic Reset | 16 Jul 2015 4:37 a.m. PST |
15mm and 6mm depending on the scope of the game. |

20mm for 'low level' gaming………6mm for lots of tanks and planes! |
boy wundyr x | 16 Jul 2015 6:13 a.m. PST |
3mm and 6mm for land – 3mm for a brigade plus per side, 6mm for a company plus per side. 1/600 for air, other than maybe coastal stuff, I see naval as being an off-shoot of air, so I would look at 1/6000 for ships, but mainly as targets for the aircraft. |
Dynaman8789 | 16 Jul 2015 6:20 a.m. PST |
I'm switching to 6mm for everything. 15mm is secondary now. |
Lion in the Stars | 16 Jul 2015 7:11 a.m. PST |
Martin Rapier does have a point: Ultramoderns is either COIN or special operations missions, so you generally don't even need tanks or IFVs. Not that I wouldn't want some, mind you. So you can get away with 15mm, 20mm, or even 28mm pretty easily, depends on what your terrain collection looks like. Since my 28mm terrain is scifi, I stuck with 15mm to recycle my European and Whereverstan terrain. Since my air gaming is mostly hex-based, I want small birds to fit in 1" hexes, which means 1/600 scale/3mm. |
Noble713 | 16 Jul 2015 7:42 a.m. PST |
I like company to battalion-sized actions, so 6mm. |
RavenscraftCybernetics | 16 Jul 2015 8:12 a.m. PST |
1:1 as in about to go down in Tx. |
Allen57 | 16 Jul 2015 8:39 a.m. PST |
Land and air: 3mm for brigades, 6mm for skirmish. Sea: 1/3000 or 1/4800 |
Visceral Impact Studios | 16 Jul 2015 9:37 a.m. PST |
6mm for battalion+ actions 15mm for platoon/company action but was recently forced to also start 20mm due to lack of Stryker MGS in 15mm (found them in 1/72 scale) 28mm for skirmish |
twawaddell | 16 Jul 2015 9:57 a.m. PST |
1:285th/6mm. Anything smaller than that and I can't see it to paint it. I can just handle the 6mm size as it is. Wow, this getting old has some annoying features! Also, there is no room for the larger scales in my house. Just can't do them justice in the space available. |
Mako11 | 16 Jul 2015 12:04 p.m. PST |
1/300th, 1/144th, and 1/100th for land. 1/1200th, or smaller, in most cases, for naval. 1/300th and 1/600th for air. |
etotheipi | 17 Jul 2015 3:06 a.m. PST |
Scale is a function of the scenarios, not the genre. It is even less a function of the era. |

Land – 15/18 mm allows combined arms and skirmish. Air – 1/600th because AAMs fly BVR now. Naval – 1/6000th because missiles… only longer distances can be involved. Not that I want to convince anyone who is in error. |
