Boatner's Encyclopedia of the American Revolution. I find it nearly impossible to make a disciplined search. Unless I can open it to exactly the page I want, I almost always find another interesting topic that diverts me from my quest for knowledge. Example. Look up Loyalist. I open the book about midway through. (Not nearly as midway as I thought….) I see "Corps of Invalids". Oh? What's that all about? Next flip of pages. "Habersham". Who cares ? Flip it again. "Liberty trees". Close, but I can pass. "Loyal American Rangers!" Closing in… Got it! |

The Oxford Dictionary does the same thing for me. If Google worked the same way, I'd never go to bed… |

That and Christopher Ward's War of the Revolution are two of my favourites. Many many hours pleasant reading and, learning. |

Yes, indeed. When I was writing my dissertation 40 years ago, I relied on Boatner and Ward for all the military narrative. And my advisor and committee were fine with that; these books are very reliable. |

Hah. Yes, Boatner always has that effect on me! |

It's the same for Boatner's "Civil War Dictionary". |

I also love Boatner – someone should do an ebook version with clickable links. I would never see the light of day again! |

Excellent book, I bought it when it was first published and reference it regularly. It should be in the library of any student of the AWI. |

Are you talking about this book: link Does it have good maps of battles ? |
Virginia Tory | 29 Jul 2015 11:47 a.m. PST |
Maps are so-so, but the narrative/source references are worth it. |
