Some of you know that I have been working on a Piedmontese Army with the eventual target being a Piedmontese-Austrian army to combat a Spanish-Neapolitan-Modenese army in a generic Compo Santo. link As the Piedmontese element is more-or-less half done (and I have now received from OMM Stephen Manley's helpful guide to WAS Italian armies) I was looking ahead to what I should do next and I have alighted on the splendid army of the Duchy of Modena.
So my small Piedmontese army will invade the Duchy (as it did in reality) and I need a small Modenese force to oppose it. Reading Manley (and Kronoskaf) I see that I can do these one battalion regiments – Reggio, Modena, Mirandola, Garfagnana and Frignano. I could also do the 3 battalion Regiment Pallude as well but I prefer the look of the two battalion Swis regiment Maderna (de Gros). The problem is that I never paint a regiment without knowing about it's flags and having a decent illustration. There are NO sources I can find on the flags of this regiment. Can anybody help? I know this is obscure but obscure is grist to my mill!

Giobaratto, Thank you very much. The illustration of a Swiss flag is in black and white but I think I can extrapolate the colours as the Swiss flames were nearly always a combination of Black-Red-Yellow and White. The cavalry flag is also useful, thanks again. Nigel |

Hi Nigel, I have also made a start on the army of Modena, using the Savoia figures available from Cran Tara. Four btns and a squadron of dragoons so far. Maverick Models do 18hC Modenese flags by the way. Colin |
